MAURICEVILLE.

(from our own correspondent.) December, 17th. During the last week rain has beer almost the rule, and tho settlers, tired o: the wet and frosts, long f or the com raencement of summer.

The men employed clearing away the Blips on the North Road would soon hare completed their work, but the late heavy rains having coused some additional tvalhc, the road is now so heavy that traihc is impossible, [and the urgent necessity of having the slips cleared away and the road metalled is now more apparent than ever.

Tenders have been accepted by the County Council West for formation of 50 chains and a bridge on the West Road, so the contractors are about commencing operations, but it is observable that no tender has been accepted for the formation of the further 29 chains, as also advertised,

The inhabitants of this settlement and | of Eketahuna manifest considerable in- | terest in the Mauricevillo sports, which take place on Boxing Day, and wind up with a Ball in the evening, A well attended meeting was held in the schoolroom, Mr Forsbergin the chair, when Stewards, Treasurer, Secretary, and Judge were appointed, Mr Gunderson kindly placed his paddock at the disposal of the promoters for the day, and the Board of Education have since' been good enough to allow the ball to be h«ld in the schoolroom. The subscribers having been very iberal, no doubt both the sports and tho ball will be very enjoyable and wellattended, and visitors will probably be glad to assist in demolishing the profusion of excellent strawberries with which the district abounds.

A petition for the establishment of a post office in Mauriceville has been prepared, numerously signed, and sent to the lion the Postmaster-General, and it is to be hoped that iUill be successful, as the population, already large, is rapidly increasing, and great inconvenience is folt by many business people having to travel so far to post or receive their letters aud papers.
