The inspector of Police said he had no further evidence to offer, whereupon the Magistrate committed Francis Wheddou and Cameron for trial, and discharged Donald McKay. Bail was refused, A man named Fred. Nesber was arrested early yesterday morning at the Bluff, charged with obtaining money at Waimate under false pretences. Later in in the day he was charged at the Police Court and remanded to Waimate. WESTPORT, Thursday. Macrae, a man working on the unemployed section of the Strath-Taieri railway, has been killed by an immense fall of earth. There is a large attendance at the show, but the ground is in a wretched condition owing to the heavy rain, which is still falling. There is a good deal of interest taken in the walking match. Tho weather during the past week has been most unfavorable for the show. Today however it was only showery. The entries were very good, and more numerous to last year. The attendance was fair for the first day. To-morrow will be a public holiday. Owing to the weather no work is being done for the races. The whole of the competitors for the twenty-four hours' walking contest at the Garrison Hall have gone into training, The entries for the steeplechase have been received. TIMARU. . Thursday. CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. Kathleen Fowler, charged with stealing a brooch, value £B, the property of Alice McComby, at Wellington, was remanded to that city for trial. At the adjourned inquest on the Penny children, found dead in their cot some time ago, the evidence showed that Professor Bickerton had failed to find any trace of poison in their stomachs. The ovidence of Dr Ross pointed to suffocation as the only feasible explanation, but the coverlet was shown to be thin and light' and post-mortem appearances were hardly in accordance with the theory of death by suffocation. The coroner regretted thai the evidence failed to show the cause of death, and the jury returned an open verdict. ■
