The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1879.

Two Mayoral elections are about to be decided in the W airarapa. We yesterday indicated the rule which ought to guide burgesses in determining their choice, and the same is as applicable to Greytown as it is to Masterton. We have no wish to prejudice either contest, 01' to underrate any one of the four candidates in the field. At Masterton Mr Feist will probably be successful, as ho possesses many useful business qualities which specially fit him not so much for leading or giving a bias to the Borough Council as for carrying out well and faithfully the > views and wishes of the majority of its members, Mr Renall, on the other hand, with a more vigorous and original intellect, is better fitted to lead" a Council than he is for giving effect to the views and wishes of its members. Mv Feist would servo a Council in j accordance with its own wishes, Mr Renall would serve it according to bis own. In ability Mr Renall has the advantage, but in general fitness he cannot compare with Mr Feist. It is for this reason we anticipate that Mr Renall, in spite of his well-earned popularity, will be beaten. At Greytown ■ Dr Smith may bo expected to head the poll for much the same reason, viz., that he possesses excellent common sense and good business qualities. Mr TJdy is more a representative of a sect ; than of a community, and though he has the advantage of being a very old settler who has always taken an active paifcin public matters, he lias never been regarded as a man possessing views and sympathies sufficiently wide to entitle him to the general confidence of the community- in which he resides We are glad to see, however, that in both townships there are two good candidates to the fore, and the coming Mayors will have the satisfaction of knowing that they win their position after a fight with worthy competitors Last night, at Masterton, we had able addresses both from Messrs Renall and Feist. Both speeches were characteristic ! Mr Renall, with his usual ability, exposed past Municipal shortcomings, and displayed, as he usually does, 6 a desire to make the resources of the Borough give as great a result in useful public works as possible. We should be very much in accord with Mr Renall s views were it not thathe makes himself the irresponsible officer of the Council instead of permitting ordinary responsible officers" to do the work. He is the gift-horse of the Council which iw one must look in the mouth. Mr Feist s address was a very businesslike remm of past work and of the means available for future operations, It is difficult to estimate the revenue of the Borough for next year until the Government intimate the provision which is to take the place of local subsidies._ We hardly agree with Mr : Feist in recommending that the Council should go to the full length of its tether in the matter of an overdraft, as should it do so its subsequent position might be an unfavorable one. We anticipate, however, that befor* the i year 1880 closes a reaction in the money , market will enable the Council to float a moderate loan, 1

The Carterton Volunteers parade this evening. Mr T. L, Thompson advertises for a married couple, The Masterton Borough Council meets this evening. Polling for the election of Mayor commences st the court house, Masterton, tomorrow at 9 a,m,, and closes at 6 p.m. We have received a full report of the Mayoral meeting at Greytown last evening, but are compelled to hold it over for our next issue. There will be no parade of either the Masterton Rifle Volunteers or Cadets on May next, the Hall being engaged on that evening for the Cricketers' Soiree. We remind our readers that to-day Mr N. J. Isaacs sells by auction in the premises next to Mr W. Bell's, jewelry &c. j in the estate of Mr B. Cohen. Our local Court of Foresters intend holding their annual sports on Boxing Day, and we believe an energetic committee are engaged in arranging the preliminaries, Notice is given that the race course ivi Opaki will be thrown open to the public on Wednesday and Thursday next, after which date it will be closed until the races, We anticipate a large attendance' of both exhibitors and the public at the spring show of the Masterton Horticultural Society which will be held in the Hall to-morrow.

In another column will be Been an announcement of the sale by auction on the 19th December, of the late Mr Bannister's Opaki estate, which is to be divided into twenty-four small farms, varying in size from 40 to 122 acres. All those interested in racing matters are reminded that general entries for the Opaki races must be made on Thursday evening next at the Club Hotel, between the hours of 7 and 9 o'clock.

The Greytown Nigger Opera Company repeat their entertainment, lately given at Greytown, at Featherston on Friday evening next for the benefit of the Featherston Cricket Club. ■ If ever! as successfully carried out as their last, a treat is m store for the Featherston public that is rarely given by amateurs; but it should be better because of the additional practice.

The .Grey town Cricket Club means business this year. Matches are being arranged for Saturday next "at Greytown between the club and volunteers, or civilians and volunteers - one on Monday, iat December, at 1 eatherston, betjvcen Greytown and Lower (Valley;/ another; at Carterton on 6th December against the Carterton Club J and one is talked of between the second elevens of the Greytown and Masterton Clubs, The Committee of the Greytown Cricket Club met at Mr W, G, Beard's office on Friday last,. Present: Messrs W. G, Beard (in the chair), Ronaldson, Maguire, and G. Beard. The two bats presented by Mr W. G. Beard for the best average scores in 1877 and 1878, were won by Mr J. Maguire in 1877, and Mr W, J. Salmon in 1878, and the ball by Mr Ronaldson for best avorage bowling—all of which have been duly handed to the winners. It was resolved to buy a box for the club property. It was resolved' to challenge the Carterton Club to a match on the 6th December, and to endeavor to arrange a match with the Lower Valley Club to be played on Monday, Ist December.
