CARTERTON.

(from: our own correspondent, )

Nov 12,1879. Monday wa« held here as a close holiday in honor of the anniversary of the natal day of H.R.H. tlio Prince of Wales; but those who wished for other than a quiet day at home, freed from the labors of their daily toil, had to go further afield for amusement, as there was neither sports nor entertainment of any kind in the place in the day time; and the socalled promenade concert in the evening was merely a dance, which lacked the success and decorum which an efficient committee of management might have given to it.

What might have been a very serious, if not fatal, accident occurred at Messrs Booth's mill last Friday. One of the men, while riding on horseback .hauling timber, had the horse stumble over a log, the animal falling on the top of him across his chest. Luckily, although severely shaken, no bones were broken, and, I am glad to say, a day or two's rest has enabled him to return to his work again. The Pastoral Society's Committee held what will, I suppose, be their last, or at rate penultimate meeting before the show comes oil. I see the Society has been somewhat roughly handled in the public local print of late, but if there is a want of success it is not to be laid at the door of the Committee, who have worked early and late energetically, and at a great sacrifice of private time, to make the annual exposition prove successful. On Saturday our knights of the willow try first conclusion with your Masterton men, and I trust to see- them as successful at the wickets as they were on Monday'* at the rifle butts. The team to represent Carterton will be selected from the following players Messrs Tancred, ListerKaye, Edmunds, G. Bennett, H. Bunny, Stiodejrass, L. Nix, Harrison, Shaw, Brady, S. Stewart, Horne, Braithwaite, Hansen, and Wilkinson. The usual drill of the Volunteers took place last night, Sub-Lieutenant Ward being in command, with twenty-four rank and file in attendance. Three new members were elected prior to dismissal. I would remind your readers that tickets for the ball in connection with the corps, to bo held on the night of the Pastoral Society s show, can be obtained on application to any member of the soiree committee or the secretary, and if an energetic committee and the hearty co-operation of the members can secure success, the volunteer dance on the 19th instant will be remembered as a pleasant evening by all attending when it has long become a thing of the past.
