FEATHERSTON.

(from OUR OWN correspondent) October, 3rd. Hudson's Surprise Troupe gave an enteitainraent in the Odd Fellows' Hall on Friday evening last, to a rather small audience, who seemed to manifest very little "surprise" at the bill of fare and its serve up. Certainly our hall is not very comfortable or attractive, and a small audience offers little encouragement to a troupe in carrying out its programme, and these combined may have detracted from the ability and enthusiasm of the artistes. Also the township has had several calls upon it during the past week, and in these hard times they must not be made too frequently. May the troupe fare better elsewhere.

A large number of excellent works have been taken out of our Public Library during the old regime, and, judging from the fact that they have not been returned at head-quarters, must have been helping to form private ones for some time past. In some instances, when the work has consisted of two or more volumes, one volume has been considerately left, but the Librarian suggested the other day, that it would be better for the person detaining the missing volume or volume* to call at the library for their confreres and thus make the works complete at least on his own side. In some'instances these works have cost the Library Committee several pounds each, and it is disgraceful that their usefulness should be destroyed through the neglect or dishonesty of some in our community. The Committee are now making efforts to trace out the books and if they are not shortly returned other steps will be taken to recover them. A few days since, three volumes were found wrapped up and thrown over the fence near the library, the person taking them out being evidently ashamed or afraid to return them.
