The Corporation proceeded for the second time against tradesmen exposing goods outside their shop-doors on the footpath, but it was shown that the front of this shop stands several feet back from the street boundary, and the Magistrate decided that as the articles exposed did not project beyond the spare ground there was no infringement of bye-laws. Costs allowed.
The Liconsed Victuallers' delegatesthree from Ohristchurch, four from Nelson, one from West Coast, one from the Thames, and four Wellington (Dunedin unrepresented)—have been holding a conference for some days. The proceedings are private, It is understood the result of their deliberations is to oppose the bottle license and to demand a rebate of duty on spirits underproof, and refer the matter to the consideration of the Tariff Committee of the House now sitting.
A deputation from the Local Industries Association waited upon the Colonial Industries Committee this morning, supplying a list of alterations in the tariff
required by different trades, some trades
wanting duties on certain articles increased and others wanting a decrease. As some trades wanted an entire remission of duties on articles which other trades desired a protective duty, the different trades had to compromise matters so that all might agree as to a list to belaid before the Parliamentary Committee.
The subsidies to local bodies will be paid within a few days.
