The annual general meeting of members or the Wairarapa Caledonian Society takes place this evening at the Prince of Wales Hotel.
A meeting of creditors of Joseph Cundy, butcher, Featherston, is convened for Wednesday, sth inst., to consider the bankrupt's application for his discharge, On Wednesday night a splendid meteor was observed from Masterton about. 9 p.m. Its direction was from the southeast, but when it reached this Borough it burst. Some say that this was only natural, othe r s that when it had reached the abode ol the author of the " Book of Remembrance 1 ' it had fulfilled its mis sion. A few, we believe, regarded it as the advance agent of the five million loan, the advent of which is a matter of general interest.
Our Carterton correspondent writes that all the commissioned officers and 38 rank and file attended the inspection parade of the Volunteers on Tuesday evening. After the inspection the corps, headed by the band, marched through the town, Several of the members were in uniform, and it ia anticipated that the whole body will have their regimentals within a week or so.—We experienced an excessively severe shock of earthquake at 2.26 this morning, the houses being regularly on the swing. Many of the candidates who figured in the late general election for New Zealand Parliament belong to the ranks of journalism, and some have been for a number of years associated with Press enterprise in various parts of the colony. Among those who were fortunate enough to secure seats in the General Assembly are —Messrs R, 0. Reid, West Coast Times; J. Ballance, Wanganui Herald ; J. Shephard, Nelson Colonist; E, Wakefield, Timaru Herald; J. W. Bain, Southland Times; F. Whitaker, Waikato Times; 0. DeLatour, late editor of the Mount Ida Chronicle; and the clever and versatile Vincent Pyke, formerly editor of the Southern Mercury. The defeated were— Messrs W. J. Steward, late of the North Otago Times; H, Manders, for many years editor of the Lake Wakatip Mail; J. P. Joyce, editor of the Southland News; and H. Feldwick, one of the proprietors of the Southland News. The last-named gentleman sustained a double defeat, having been beaten for Invercargill by Mr Bain, and for Geraldine by Mr Wakefield.

The report and balance sheet for the past year was read and adopted A challenge from the Masterton Borough Club was accepted, to play a match on the 15th November. The following will represent
the Opaki and Upper Plain :-Messrs Harrison, Dagg, Matthews, A. Hare, McLachlan, T. Chamberlain, R. Fitton, Welch, Hessey, C. Matthews, Cresswell, and D. McGregor. The old committee was elected for the ensuing year.
