(Abridged from the New Zealand Times.) The ordinary meeting of the above Board was held at a quarter-past 11 o'clock on Wednesday last. Present—the Hon. C, J. Pharazyn (in the chair), Ven. Archdeacon Stock, Rev J. Paterson, and Messrs G, Beetham, C. Pharazyn, Toomath, and Hutchison, The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read, The examiners' reports on the late examinations were presented and read. ACCOUNTS-IE AM NEW SCHOOL,
The Board accounts were stated to be as follows:—Payments made for the month, £2480 19s 2d; balance now in bank, £1452 3s 7d; payments to be made, £1985 5s sd. Speaking of the building fund, Mr Hutchison raised the question when the new schools for Te Aro were to be commenced, Time was slipping away, and a start ought, he thought, to be made. The Chairman said it was no use to begin in the present state of their funds. Perhaps next month they might be able to consider the matter. Mr Hutchison : Why not save the month, and make a beginning? The Chairman : Where shall we get the money? Mr Hutchison; From the Government, where everything else is got, The Chairman said it was useless to incur liabilities and get into difficulties before they were sure of their position. After some discussion the matter dropped.
. KI'KIPUNI. Mr Shute attended as a deputation from the residents of Kuripuni, near Musterton, to urge the Board to build a school there. Mr Donald Donald had given a section of land for the purpose. Thero were nearly a 100 children in the district, and the nearest school to their homes was from one to two miles distant, The Board agreed to accept the land, and to consider the question of building a school when they possessed sufficient funds, and the Masterton school became overcrowded,
CARTERTON SCHOOL. A discussion took place as to whether any remuneration should be granted to the daughter of the master of the above school for assistance in the school, It was pointed out that the regulations would not permit this being done, as the young lady was not a classified teacher. The matter was postponed.
EKETAHUNA SCHOOL, Mr Beetham brought under notice the subject of a portion of the contract money having been held back from Mr Petherick, and explained the circumstances at some length. The money had been withheld because ths building was not according to contract, but repairs had since been effected by Mr Petherick. He moved that the amount held over be now paid to Mr Petherick, Mr Hutchison seconded the motion, which was carried. ABSENT TEACHERS. Mr Lee brought under the notice of the Board, the fact that teachers were in the habit of being absent from their work without leave from the Board, and read a list of cases which had come under his notice personally. The evil was a growing one. Upon the suggestion of the Inspector it was resolved that head masters be required to furnish a quarterly list of absent teachers, with assigned reason of absence.
Archdeacon Stock moved that all members of the committees shall meet as a Standing Committee on the secjnd Tuesday in each month, at 2 p.m. The motion gave rise to considerable desultory conversation, but was eventually carried. A large amount of routine business having also beon transacted, the Board rose shorily after 2 p.m.
