(3TOM OUK OWN CORRESPONDED) October 24, 1879. THE usual drill of the volunteers took place on Tuesday evening, after which a meeting was held and four new members elected and sworn in. The captain informed the corps that it was proposed to have a rifle match on the Prince of Wales' birthday between representative teams chosen from the Greytown, Masterton, and Carterton Volunteers. After some discussion a resolution was passed as to the willingness of this corps to take part in audi match, and the captain was authorised to enter into communication with the commanding officers in the other townships with a view of making arrangements for the contest. Some of our nien are at the butts daily, and on Saturday afternoon the usual parade takes place for practice. The co-ps after inspection next Tuesday will march out, I hope the Local Board will soon take steps to cover in the unsightly drain from Barlow's butchers' shop onward towards the southern end of the town alon« the main road, or I fear if they do not the coroner's services will be called into requisition. There has been a good de ifch of water in it lately, and in many places the watercress is matted and in luxuriant growth. Numbers of children, from foil ■ years and upwards, are daily passing along the road to and from school, and it is only a day or two since that a youngster fell into the drain and floundering about, unable to extricate himself, and would inevitably have been drowned had not a carpenter, who was working hard by, come to the rescue and pulled him out.
