ST. MATTHEWS CHURCH.

To the Editor of the Wauaraiv.. Daily. Sir-I wish to add a few words to this correspondence. In my former letter I omitted to notice the accusation of " breach of faith" as to the pew rents in the letter of " another Churchman." Is this really the case ? Debentures were given by certain members of the committee, the interest upon which, according to the last yearly account, was paid out°of the ordinary church funds, and practically the liability on those debentures is borne by those funds,

The tendency of your leader in yesterday f issue and of all your correspondents except myself is to show that the falling off in the funds is attributable to Mr Teakle, and in some part to his mode in conducting the services, treating the matter entirely as one of £ s. d , or a commercial speculation, wherein the giving up pew rents was one source of failure. Now, sir, I must take higher ground than this. Pew rents never were legal, and for years past there has been a strong movement amongst the most enlightened churchmen in England towards their abolition.

As to the mode of conducting public worship, I consider this is not a fit subject for comment in a public journal between members of the colonial Church of England-Episcopalians, but is one entirely referable to the Bishop of the diocese.

I will not further refer to the letters of your correspondents of yesterday and to-day except to notice the extraordinary Sllgestion of "Churchman No. 2" that we should adopt the Wesleyan system of changing ministers. I have always felt that the ties of pastor and congregation increase with the years they are united together.

In conclusion, I would add that the difhculty as to funds is not to be met as men would meet a matter of ordinary life, but by an earnest Christian liberality on the part of all by giving according to their liberality. This has been proved over and over again in the history of many churches,

I am, &c, ~ , , A Parishioner, Masterton, 22nd October, 1879.
