MEETING OF RABBIT TRUSTEES.
Meetings of both the-Awhea and Otaraia Rabbit Trustees was held at the Waihenga .Mel'on-the 7th inst. Tliis being the first meeting of Trustees for the Otaraia Distriet, J. P. Russell, ssq., was elected Chairman. After the Boards had met separately a joint meeting took place, it having been arranged that this should be done in order to consult together as to ' how far combined action would be possible. C. Pharazyn, Esq., Chairman for Awhea District, was voted to the Chair, and stated the objects of the meeting and also explained what had been done by the Awhea Trustees. The whole question was thoroughly discussed and a <<ood deal of valuable information elicited. All present seemed satisfied that the system of poisoning with phosphorus had nowproved a thorough success, and that by carrying this on systematically, awl at the same time shooting the rabbits where not very numerous, and also by encmirauiii" their natural enemies, the difficulty will be conquered very .shortly. It was arranged that the phosphorus and rhodium be supplied free to all applicants, and that in order to save trouble and ensure its being pnperly mixed this would be don? at central places in each district, applicants supplying or paying for the wheat. A circular letter was addressed to all landowners in each district, urging them to take immediate action in the matter so as to. obviate the necessity for enforcing the compulsory clauses of the Act, and hoping sufficient would be clone before the visit of an Inspector whom th. Trustees propose to appoint, to enable him to report favorably, In the Awhea district a rate of sixpence per hundred acres, in the Otaraia district one of a farthing per acre were agreed to. A resolution was also passed asking the Government to make some provision by by which duty payable on gunpowder supplied to Rabbit Trustees might be re mitted. Also to arrange in some way for the importation of a sufficient supply of phosphorous, Their attention was also called to the difficulty which arises in consequence of nothing being|done to destroy rabbits on Crown Lands.
