(PER PKESS AGENCV,) a WELLINGTON. Tuesday, PARLIAMENTARY. In the House of Representatives, petitions were presented by Newman against the elections of Dr Wallis and Hiirst, for City West; also by Richardson against Grey's election for Christchurch on the 17th instant, A Select Committee will inquire into the allegation against these elections. After the presentation of the address to the Governor, during which the House adjourned, Sir George Grey said he and his colleagues had placed their resignation in the hands of the Governor, who accepted them, but had requested that they should continue in office until their successors were appointed.
Hall stated he had been sent for by the Governor and had undertaken to form a Ministry, He was now engaged in that work, He had intended to ask for an adjournment till Thursday, but had been informed by the Premier that supplies were necessary at the earliest possible date. He would only ask for an adjournment to next day to grant supplies, and an adjournment afterwards till Thursday, when lie would be in a position to announce that a Government had been formed which would command their confidence. House then adjourned,
Three Greek fishermen went out fishing on Saturday last, but have not been seen since rounding the Heads. Several search parties are out.
The only case of any interest in the Supreme Court to-day was that of Cornelius Fisher, charged with maliciously lulling a cow belonging to a neighbor. He was acquitted of that charge, and the one of killing sheep is yet to come on, At a caucus of supporters of the late Ministry forty-three were present, among them Pylce and Shephard. After a long discussion as to future line of action, an executive committee was formed to watch over aftairs. Agreed nothing further should be divulged.
. NELSON. Tuesday. An old settler named Enoch Jellyman, one of the original settlers, was thrown from a cart this morning, falling on his . head. Death was instantaneous, WESTPORT. Tuesday. It is reported that two men out gold prospecting at Karamea, since beginning in September made £3 a day. WANGANUI. Tuesday There was a general half holiday for the public opening by the Mayor of the new volunteer drill shed. A grand ball will be held this evening, Yesterday a man named Bellamy was ordered to contribute four pounds and IBs a week for the support of his wife and family in Wellington. DUNEDDf. CHRISTCHURCH. Monday. The question of building a pumping station, and the difficulty in the way of sinking the sewer tank, formed the subject of another report from the engineer to the Drainage Board.
At the sittings of the Supreme Court to-day the following cases were disposed ofR. W. Jones, forgery (four cases), six years'penal servitude; W.Barnard, sheep-stealing, six years' penal servitude; W. H. Reid, a boy of fifteen years of age, stealing saddlery, one day's imprisonment ; Thomas McCullum, receiving the property from the last-named prisoner, six months'hard labor; Mary Halliday, receiving money under false pretences, one month hard labor; Jane Mahoney, forgery, one year hard labor; Edward Olarkson and John Miller, robbery from a woman with violence, ten years' penal servitude.
This afternoon, three of the hard-labor gang from the Lyttelton gaol, while being marched back to the gaol after work, attempted to escape. Two shots were fired ty the warders, which so scared the runaways that they permitted then,selves to be recaptured at once, They are long sentence men, and their names Thomson" James, and Irvine.
Tuesday. Smart, indicted for rape on a Maori girl, was found guilty, but recommended to mercy; sentenced to eight years' penal servitude. grahamstown. Monday. No election writ has been heard of here. The Auckland Star says that Mr Daigaville will contest the Thames if Mr Whitaker refuses. Judgment in the case of the removal of pigs by the county contractor has been reserved till Friday by the Resident Magistrate. °
AUCKLAND. Monday, The Resident Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff in the suit brought by MiNewman, the defeated City West candidate, against M r Macliattie, Dr Wallis' agent, for treating electors. The case will probably be used as evidence in the election petition against Dr Wallis, At the Acclimatisation Society's meeting to-day it was stated that trout which had been forwarded by the Southland Salmon Commissioners must have nearly all been dead. Out of 4000 sent from Otago nearly 3000 have arrived, and a few of these were sent away to be put in the stream. Petitions will be presented asking that a production duty should be imposed upon hares, The potatoe crop at Onehunga was almost wholly destroyed by the frost last night, The hop fcrop has been completely withered, and the loss is estimated at £2,000.
In the Supreme. Court to-day, Judge Gillies, in charging the Grand Jury, said that whilst the offences which would be brought before them were not of a severe kind, he could not shut his eyes, nor could they either, to the fact that since the last sitting of the Court there had occurred serious outrages within this judicial district, the offendersJn which have not been brought to justice, nor hardly any steps ! taken for that purpose. This we must i feel to be a very unsatisfactory state of affaiis. So long as the crime remains unpunished, and so long as the strong arm of the law was paralysed by political considerations, we could not hope for any feeling for the lives and properties of settlers, nor expect anything but a repetition of similar occurrences. Tuesday, Whitaker accepts Ball's invitation to take the Attorney-Generalship and a seat in the Upper House. He leaves for Wellington to-morrow. GISBORNE, Saturday.
