GREYTOWN CEMETERY.

To Ik Editor of the Waiuahapa Daily. Grey town, Sept. 20, 1879. Sin,— I There has been some little stir in usually quiet Greytown over the atrocious proceedings of our rural sexton, who seems to imagine that a pauper only needs a covering of two feet of mother ear'li. A poor unfortunate man, without friends in the district, is—if not by medical unskilfulness, at any rate by medical accident—hurried out of time, and dying in " forma pauperis" is interred in a way that has made the people of Greytown justly indignant. The whole question of our cemetery wants taking up thoroughly, and the Trust put on a better basis. I remember some three years ago, the Masterton Cemetery was in a disgraceful condition. The first time I visited it, I witnessed the horrible sight (to me) of a man driving a mob of horses right over the graves, On enquiry I found that the cemetery was used as a run for the same. But very soon after, a few of the most energetic residents of your rising town took the matter in hand and now your cemetery and the reserve attached to it is a credit to the Yalley, There is a crying necessity for a similar work here, and it is to be hoped the people will take the matter up with the same energy as was displayed by their Masterton contemporaries at the time to which I refer, so that we shall have proper regulations, and not merely proper regulations, but the same well carried out. At present, one mail—and he not a very high type of the' genus homo' —seemsto have, or to be allowed to have the entire control of matters, charging whatever he pleases, and almost assumes to be sole proprietor of this most necessary public property. This is an important matter, needing prompt attention, and as your paper has a large circulation in this district, I trust you will find room for these few lines. I am, &c., (Pro Bono Publico.
