WHO WAS THE APRIL FOOL?
The wife of a certain noble lord does her best every year to make her husband on the Ist of April what is vulgarly called an April fool, Of course, the task becomes annually more and more difficult, but she generally manages to succeed, This year she was at her wits' end what to do till a happy thought struck her. She would disguise herself as a beggar, force herself into his presence, and persuade him to give her half-a-crown, Lady X. is a capital amateur actress, and her " makeup" for the occasion was complete—it was impossible for anyone to identify her in the least. Siezing her opportunity she stole out of the house and after walking round the square returned and boldly rung the bell, The footmarks. opened the door evidently did her —so far, ao good. " I want to see Lord X." said she. " Can't do it," replied the man, "he is engaged in his study, "But I must seo him, I want to speak to him particularly." "Well, I tell you you can't see him, isn't that answer enough 1" " I insist on seeing him." " Insist <m you 1 if you are not soon off I'll call a policeman and give you into custody." ' Fool' said her ladyship, quite forgetting the role she was plaj ing in her anger in being refused admittance to her own house,' " don't you know who I am." " No, and don't want to know: but lam not going to be called a fool by the likes of you"; and as she attempted to push her way past, he took hold of her arms, turned her into the street, and shut the door in her face. Lord X. was saved, and Lady X. confessed that she felt she was the April idiot.
