(PER PRESS AGENCY. WELLINGTON. Friday. It was a very exciting election to-day, and was conducted with the greatest energy on the part of all the candidates. Everyone was agreed Levin would head the poll, but opinion was divided as to who would be second. The following in the result, subject to revision as cases of impersonation are alleged :—Levin, 1191 • Hunter 813 ; Greenfield 415. One foreigner's vote was challenged on the ground that he was not naturalised. A great deal of good humored disorder prevailed at the close. The crowd was immense. Hutchison's friends carried him on their shoulders.
A writ has been issued by Travel's, solicitor, against Curie, Anderson, & Ander. son, owners of the Chronicle, for libel. Threo counts in the declaration, on each of which plaintiff claims L2OOO damages. The cause of action is the publication of certain false statements in a certain telegram published from Ashburton purporting to be one from Whitmore to Inglis with regard to opposing Saunders for Cheviot, and it is authoritatively stated not to be a copy of Whitmore's telegram, but to be materially altered.
Cornelius Fisher, a Porirua settler, was committed for trial for feloniously killing a cow belonging to a neigh Coring settler. Prisoner's two sons were called to give evidence, but neither understood the nature of an oath or knew anything of the Creator. One son is 19 and the other 14, Their evidence was refused. The same prisoner wa3 charged with stealing and killing a neighbor's sheep, and was committed on that also. PATEA. Friday. Result of the polling at Carlyle, Atkinson, G4 ; Sherwood, 64. NELSON. Friday. It is expected that Shepherd will be returned unoppoied for Waimea, but Curtis and' Acton Adams, candidates for Nelson, were proposed without their knowledge, The following are the returns for the Wanganui election:—Bryce 53G; Ballance, 525; Fox 473. Message has been received to the effect that Tole has defeated Whitaker for Eden. Macandrew was returned for Port Chalmers. AUCKLAND. Thursday, Sir George Grey leaves for Lyttelton direct to-morrow, to be there before the Ohristchurcli election. Mr Moss, a Government supporter, has been returned for Parnell. Mr Sheehan leaves for Napier to-mor-row morning to contest the seat for Clive against Mr Orraond. A keen contest is expected to-morrow between Messrs Whitaker and Tole (the latter a Government candidate.) Mr Tole is expected to win by a small majority. At Marsden the candidates nominated are Sir Robert Douglas, the Rev Mr Bruce, and Messrs Dargaville and Colbeck. The latter is a Greyite, and the others are independent candidates. The show of
hands was in favor of Mr Colbeck. At the Waipa nomination the show of hands favored Mr I. A. Whitaker, the independent candidate. Messrs Roche and Cunningham ran as supporters of Sir George Grey, and Mr McMinn on the Opposition ticket. NAPIER, Friday. Captain Russell and Mr Sutton ad. dressed a meeting of electors at the Spit this evening. One of the committee of Buchanan and Maney moved an amendment to the vote of confidence, which was carried by sixteen to fourteen.
Last night, at Taradale, Messrs Maney and Buchanan addressed the elector*, and on a motion of confidence being put, an amendment was. carried that the electors see no reason to alter the decision of the previous meeting expressing confidence in the late members; the numbers being 23 to 18. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. At the Ashley nomination to-day, Messrs Moorhouse, Fendall, and Cunningham were proposed. The show of hands was in fivor of the two former gentlemen.
TIMARU. Thursday. At the Geraldine nomination to-day, Mr Edward Wakefield was proposed by Mr Alfred Cox, and seconded by Mr Michael Quinn; Mr Henry Foldwick was proposed by Mr C. F. Gray, and seconded by Mr H. Arrop. The show of hands was nearly two to one in favor of Mr Wakefield. A poll was demanded for Mr Feldwick, DUNEDIN. Thursday,
The numbers are unaltered on a scrutiny for the city election. The candidates made short speeches on the declaration of the poll. Mr Reeves announced that lie would contest the next election.
Mr Macassey is talked of at Arrow as likely to be nominated on Friday. If he is, Mantlets' return is certain, as the votes will be so split between Mason, Manders Finn, and Macassey, that Manders and his friends devoutly hope that this new candidate will be run. On dit that Mr C. S. Eeeve3 is to be the Ministerial candidate for the Thames if Sir George Grey vacates his seat there; but we scarcely believe it. It is generally thought that the Port Chalmers election to-morrow v will be a very close affair, and that 20 votes will decide it. The friends of both candidates are straining every nerve, and every available vote will be mustered; indeed, some will be brought from a considerable distance north and south. Mr Green is sure of a majority at Blueskin; but the committee of Mr Macandrew, in order to reduce it as much as possible, intend to despatch to the polling there as many votes for him as can be induced to accept passage by railway to Blueskin,
The greatest interest is taken in the Port Chalmers election. Both sides are straining, every ncive, but it is generally believed that Mr Macandrew will have a small majority. Mr Green addressed a large meeting at the Pori, last night, receiving a vote of confidence by a large majority.
JNVEPvCARGILL, Thursday. The polling for Wallace is going on to-day; a number of Invercargill men have gone to Lumsden to record their votes. It is believed that it will be a very close affair between the several candidates. Later, The poll for Wallace took place to-day, but owing to the straggling character of the district the returns will not be all in until to-morrow. At present Hirst is ahead, Joyce is second, and Cuthbertson last.
MASTERTONPERMANENT RVESTMENT AND BUILDING SOCIETY. A general meeting of shareholtks of the above Society was held in the Council Chambers, last evening. Mr M Caselberg in the chair. The Manager, Mr James Brovi, read the following Report and Balance heet: — Report, The Directors have much plesure in submitting this, their third annul report and balance sheet, to the sharehojers. The transactions of the past yer have proved highly satisfactory, no let than 83 now shares having been taken ik The debtor balance of last year-£s4l' Bdhas been wiped off, and the Direcprs are glad to state that their Profit ail Loss account now stands with a credit hlance of £4612s lid, which sum woull have been considerably larger but for he expense of replacing stationery, &c destroyed by fire last year. The confidence of the public ii well represented under the head of fixedlepo-sit-s, the sum of £llls having been |aced at the disposal of the directors at invest varying from Gto 8 per cent, • I It is a source of congratulation jiat, notwithstanding the lengthened periol of depression in the money market the|Society lias sustained no losses and hasnot been compelled to realise on any of lie securities it holds, in all cases the mlrtgages are paid with satisfactory regularity, ' The investors' subscriptions have «- cecded last year's receipts by nearly £lO, and the business of the Society has been largely increased, while the management expenses have been even less than in foiv mer years. \
The Directory regrets the loss sustained by the Society and itself by the death of; one of its ablest supporters, viz., Mr H. Bannister, whose active interest and support has been appreciated by all members. The vacancy thus caused was temporarily filled by the appointment of Mr A. R. Bunny. Mr Robert Donald, after an active term of office, retires, and will not seek re-elec-tion, having left the district. Messrs J. C. Boddington and A. E. Bunny have been duly proposed as Directors for the ensuing term, and are rocommended by the Board for election. The Directors also recommend the appointment of Messrs Gray and A. W. Kenallas Trustee in the place of Messrs lovns and Williams, who have ceased to hold office. M. Oaselbehg, Chairman. The Chairman congratulated the shareholders on the satisfactory position of the Society at this the close of the third year. They were in a fair way now of doing well, and the amount of profit as shown by the balance sheet (which we published a short time ago) was nearly 11 per cent, on the investments. He was sorry there was not a larger attendance, but tin ught it showed the shareholders had confidence in the directors. A letter from Mr A. W, Benall was read, apologising for his absence through indisposition. On the motion of Mr T. Gardner, seconded by Mr W, Perry, the report and balance sheet were adopted. Messrs J. C. Boddington and A. R. Bunny were elected directors to fill the vacancies which had occurred. Mr Galloway proposed and Mr Yile seconded, that Messrs F. Gray and A. W. Renall be appointed Trustee which was carried unanimously, A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
