The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 4, 1879.

To-day, the election for two members for the Wairarapa, takes place. We said yesterday, what little we thought it necessary to utter on the three candidates before the electors, because we knew that to-day's newspaper would be but little read, and that the time for action had come, We are very glad to know that Mr Bunny has denounced plumping, as the election may now be expected to be fairly decided, and not determined by any side wind. We arc also pleased at the comparative absence of personalities which has characterized the contest. Whatever the issue may be, political differences have not disturbed private friendships, and this is as it should be, It is not too much to say that a kindly, personal feeling is generally entertained towards all the candidate?, We would remind electors that the poll closes at 4 p,m,, and that each of them can give a vote to two candidates, but that he cannot give two votes to one candidate, Each elector should, if he supports Mr Bunny, vote for' Bunny and Beetham.' If, on the contrary, he supports Mr Phamyn, he should vote for 'Phamyn and Beetham.' This is the fairest way of settling the matter. The result of plumping, which all the candidates discountenance and condemn, might be the return of Messrs Pharazyn and Bunny—a result which we believe every elector in the district would deplore. "Fight, therefore, fairly," we urge on the electors. Vote for "Pharazyn and Beetham "or "Bunny and Beetham," as the case may be, and you will be doing all in your power to promote the interests of your special candidate without injuring the chances of Mr Beetham. In conclusion, we have much pleasure in publishing the following telegrams which we received day:Standard no authority whatever from me for advertising " Plump for Bunny." Kecommend supporters to record both votes. Henry Bunny. Please notify that I wish all my friends to declare both votes. Bunny does the same. Geome Beetham.

We direct attention to Messrs J, Cook and Son's Tailors, Wellington, advertisement in another column, Monday next is the polling day for the election of five trustees for the Wainuioru Rabbit district. The poll takes place at tho School-house, Gladstone.

John Duthie and Co., of Wellington, announce that they lmve on sale, Reaping and Binding Machines, &c,, Tenders close on Saturday, next for the following works:—Wesleyan Church, Greytown; Bridge at Waipopo, Tupurupuru; and additions to a bridge at Gladstone,

Tenders aro invited until Monday, tho Bth inat., for fitting the interior of Mr Hales' new premises in Queen-street,

A meeting of members of the Masterton and Opaki Jockey Club takes place on Saturday evening next, at tho Olub Hotel. A meeting of the Masterton School Committee takes place in the Council Chambers, to-day, at 3 p.m. for the election of a member for the Education Board, We expect to receive the result of the election from the different polling places, between 7 and 8 p,m, We will post at the Council Chambers all information we receive as soon as we get it, believing that this arrangement will be a convenient one for the public. The Alfrcdton returns irill not, of course, be to hand to-night, jut the number of votes recorded there Till probably be under 20. At the nomination yesterday of candilates to fill the vacancies caused by tho ixpiration of the term of office of Messrs 3ish, Feist and McCardlc, in the Masteron Borough Council, the following were luly nominated as candidates:—Messrs L Bull, J. H. Corbett, D. Donald, E. Mat, J. C. Fergusson, W, Francis, and \V. W, McCardle. The poll will take dace on Thursday, 11th September, beween the hours of 9 a.m. and G p.m. Writes the New Zoalander:—The final lerformance of the Hudson's Surprise 'arty drew a good house on Saturday ivening, and the performance was received nth every manifestation of approval. The lompany appear at the Lower Hutt this ivening, and afterwards make a trip to he inland townships, They are bound to ibtain a good reception, for the entertainnent is just of the class which will take, fit suits all patrons, being lively, gay and pee from tho slightest imputation of loudmess. The ladies of the company may bo [especially commended ; not alone for their vocal and musical talents, but also for their unassuming manners. Indeed were they guests at an evening drawingroom reception, their deportment could I not be more' en regale' and fiee from re ■proach. Mr Hudson contemplates a lengthened tour with his company, extending to New South Wales, Queensland, and India, which country he lias visited on several occasions. His "Surprise Party," if he keeps them together, will be heard of favorably from whatever city or clime they visit. It would appear that railway bridges at Home have to undergo severe tests before they are open for traffic, as the following extract will show:—' ( The new bridge constructed by the Caledonian Eailway Company across the Clyde, a little below the Broomielaw, Glasgow, was officially tested on June 17th, by 20 of the Company's largest locomotives, weighing about 70 tons each, being placed on it one at a time, The bridge stood the test well, the deflection being only 1| inch, which was recovered when the pressure was removed, The bridge has five spans, and the foundation of its piers are 100 feet below the bottom of the river."
