CATERRTON.
[from our own correspondent] August 15th, 1879. Rainer's world-travelled Panorama of the American War opened here last night, to the largest audience, without exception, that has ever assembled in the Town Hall since its erection, and although there were one or two joyous individuals whose exuberance of spirits could not, from time to time be restrained, those present, were, a3 a rule, most orderly, and seemed thoroughly interested with the abie remarks made by the lecturer, as scene
after scene was produced before them. The various cartoons are admirably got up, the two most attractive views, in my opinion, being those of Harper's Ferry and Fort Munro, The short sketch given of the life of the celebrated General Lee, and the vicissitudes through which he passed, prior to his death, could not but strike a chord of sympathy in the heart of every individual present. The mechanical effects of the naval combat between the Kearsage and the Alabama, and the funeral of President Lincoln are very cleverly contrived, and evidently gave great satisfaction to the audience.
The entertainment is enlivened by instumental music, the cornet-playing alone being well-worth the price of admission, and some half-dozen songs were given in' a very able manner, one of a comic nature on the opening of the Invercargill Railway acted upon the risible faculties of all present. After the panorama had run its course, a distribution of gifts took place, the principle prizes—a handsome tea and coffee service and a silver watch—being won by Messrs Williamson and Eobinson respectively, Owing to their success last night the proprietary have resolved on exhibiting here again this (Friday) evening-
. There is to be a concert in the old Town Hall this evening, but I fear the counterattraction will prevent it being a success from a pecuniary point of view. The Pastoral Association meet at their offices next week, on the 22nd,' to elect a secretary in the place of Mr Forbes, who has sent in his resignation, and to arrange for future shows, prizes, &c,
