Yesterday morning Lawrence, who was still apparently suffering from the effects of drink, was in the oyster saloon at the railway terminus when Mr Finlayson camo in fie again spoke to Lawrence and aecussed him of being drank, whereupon Lawrence took a pistol from his pocket and shot Finlayson dead. Four chambers of the revolver he lmd in his possession were found loaded.
The assassin was at once arrested and couveyed to the lock-up. He lias been remanded for a week, The affair caused very considerable sensation, as Mr Finlayson was very well known and much respected,
There have been an unusual number of violent deaths lately. Not long ago Mr Bates the actor, met with his death in a mysterious maimer, and no donb< he had been robbed, On Saturday a mining manager named Boardraco came to town; next morning he was found dead in tlia streets cf Carlton. There were 110 external marks of violence found on the body, but it has transpired that
the mail's pockets had been rilled, and that his cost had been put 011 reversed. There is no doubt that the crime is greatly on tne increase, which is shown in the number of robberic and acts of violence continually taking place.
