AUSTRALIAN WOOL IN CHINA.
Monckton Synnot Eros, forward the accompanying letter from China re introducing woolen yarns into that country to the Argus, with the remark that the subject is of some interest to a great number of people who have not yet taken any steps to carry the project through : Chefoo, China, April 23rd, 18ft). Monckton Synnot Esq, Melbourne, Australia. Dear Sir-Our attention having been drawn to your endeavours to introduce woolen yarn maadc in Australia to the notice of the Chinese, we venture to write to yon on the subject, and to ask you to send ns samples of the yarn produced in your part of the world, together with estimate of laying clown in China, and such further particulars as may enable us to call the attention of the native weavers here to its use. We are not at all sanguine as to its immediate or speedy introduction amongst the Chinese, as we fear the price of woolen yarn may prove an obstacle to its extended use. Still we think it worth trying, as it is only a few years ago that cotton yarn was introduced here for the first time, and its consumption on a moderate scale may now be looked upon as established. The Chinese Governor of one of the western provinces of the empire (Kansuh( ' has lately imported a quantity of machi- . nery for spinning and. weaving sheep's wool, as. there is an abundance of it in the ' neighbourhood, and it is proposed to utilise it for that purpose. It is quite possible tlrofc the scheme may not succeed entirely, but at at all events it may serve
to familiarise the natives to the use of woolen yarn spun by machinery, and so indirectly further the use of Australian yarn in China, A great deal will depend on the comparative cost of wool in Australia aiid in the north of China. Wo should say that ordinary quality of wool may be purchased here at about the equivalent of Gd a pound, and other fine qualities about Is a pound. All the wool in China, or very nearly all, arrives at market in unwashed state, with a large proportion of dirt in it, by which the weight is increased, and thus the price of wool here compared with that in Australia has to be considered together with this circumstance, As we have had no previous correspondence with you, i % beg to refer you to our correspondents,f Messrs Bright Brothers, of your city, for information about ourselves—Meanwhile, wero, dear sir, yonrs faithfully, Fergusson & Co.
