MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The following reports were read at the late meeting of the Council : Council Chambers, July Bth, 1889. ■ Rqmi n Borough Endowment, According to instructions received from the Council, your Committee selected land in the Mangaone Block to the extent of 1000 acres, which your committee submitted to the Government. Your committee did not succeed in getting the full amount selected, but have pleasure in informing the Council that 746 acres have been approved, and will be gazetted forthwith. The land is situated about one mile east of Eketahuna, and is of good quality. , ■ D. McGregor, Chairman Committee.
Masterton, July 8,1879. His Worship the Mayor and the Borough Councillors. Gentlemen—l have the honor to report that the sum of LIGO has been received from the Customs Department since: last meeting for hotel licenses. L 125 9s lid has been paid during the same time, and the present overdraft is L 512 lGs Id. The sum of LIOO may now be paid to the Masterton Road Board, and the balance can be paid in about two weeks' time. I have, itc,, R. Brown, ' Treasurer.
Kuripuni, July 7,1879. Mayor and Councillors Borough of Masterton. Gentlemen—l beg to report to you that in consequence of the Dog Pound becoming a nuisance to the town, I have discontinued impounding them, as I consider the centre of the town is not the proper place for a Dog Pound. If the Council were to supply their officers with the Dog Act, proceedings could be immediately taken against persons having unregistered dogs in their possession, The number of dogs impounded since Ist January, 1870, is 33, and the number of dogs destroyed or killed is 11. I have, &c., J. C. Ingram, Inspector of Nuisances.
Kuripuni, July 7,1879. His Worship the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Masterton.
Gentlemen-I beg to state I liava received complaints from parties who, having a license for one cart, are working two or three carts not licensed, I wish it made known that according to the bylaws (Clause 162) it is the cart that is licensed and not the person, and I wich it made known that no person can ply for hire or do hired work within the Borough of Masterton with any vehicle unless duly licensed. I would also recommend that the licensed vehicles should show the proper sign with name and number of license on each vehicle. I have, Ac., J. 0. Ingram, Inspector of Nuisances.
WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. July 8,1879. The ditching and filling-in Villa and Victoria-streets is completed, some metal only being required, Some metal much required has been deposited at places on the Upper Plain Road. This was carted from the halfchain road, Dixon-street, an expense that will be avoided by taking the metal now being broken at 3s Gel per yard on the Uppor Plain Road near where'it is required ; all the pits where the metal has been obtained being under water. Could a piece of land be secured suitable for a pit, from which metal could be taken for roads, your committee would strongly, urge on the Council the wisdom of securing it, as there is no metal throughout the wnole Upper Plain Road at the command of the Council, The same action, most likely, would be advantageous in other parts of the Borough. The filling-in and formation of road over the culverts in lorns' estate has been carried as far as that state of land would admit of. The same observation will apply to the contract at the south end of Chapel-street. Preparations for other contracts are going on, but the state of mud and slush so prevalent at present bars all progress. A, W, Renall, Chairman Works Committee,
' July 7,1819. His Worship the Mayor and the Borough Councillors; Gentlemen—l beg to report on the works in course of construction, Chapel-street contract is progressing very slowly. No work has been done for the last nine days, owing to the bad state of the weather. The footpath in Queen-street has not been commenced yet, but Mr Culleti has got most of his timber ready for a start,, The approaches in lorns' Estate are commenced, and in course of a few. days will be completed, Owing to late heavy, rains Kuripuni has been nearly flooded through the culvert being too small at the bottom end of South-street. The culvert is 12 inches square. The are two 7x4 drains leading to the culvert, which causes the water, to flow over on the road, and is washing the' road away. There are two men on the Upper- Plain stone-breaking, They have from .4 to 5 yards broken. I have, &c., George Hutton.
