The first severe frost of the season made its appearance last night. We broke ifce a third of an iucli thick this morning. The treasurer of tho Miisterton Hospital acknowledges the receipt of £2 5s from tho employees of the Kaumingi Station. A letter from Mr F. G. Mooro, with reference to the recent meeting of ratepayers in No. G Ward, is unovoidably held over till our next issue.

The usual monthly meeting of the Masterton Hospital Committee was held yesterday afternoon at tho Institute. Present—Messrs D. McGregor (chairman), Bennett, Girdlestone, and Payton. The Treasurer reported that the balance to the credit of the Hospital- was £lOl 17s Ud, Tho Secretary reported the receipt of a handsomo English clock, presented to tho Hospital by Mr A. Bisli, and a vote of thanks was passed by tho committee to tlie donor, Tho Secretary was also instructed to convey the thanks of tho committee to those ladies who had sent old linen for the use of patients. It was resolved that a garden should bo fenced in adjacent to the building, and that Mr J. Y, Smith should be requested to superintend the erection of tho fence. The

Jago, £9 6s; J, Lynch, £6 2s, It was resolved that an application should bo made to the Masterton Borough Council for a subsidy, and that the Institute Committee should he offered £2 2s per annum for the use of a meeting room. After other routine business had been despatched the meeting adjourned. Tho war excitement appears to. have reached Feilding, as wo find by the local papov that a meeting has been called to consider the advisability of forming a cavalry troop. The Bruce Herald say 3" Mr Thomas Roid, of South Tokomairiro, brought to to our office last evening two fine specimens of chicory root grown on his property, fit may be remembored that lie grew about three-quarters of an aero of the same last year, which realised £6los per ton. At a meeting of the Committee of tho Greytown Horticultural Society on Tuesday held wifh a view to consider their position in connection with the late Soireo, it was found that the liabilities were in excess of the assets. Several accounts were passed for payment and it was decided that subscriptions be asked to defray the debts of tho Society. The committee deserve support as they have done their best to pay tne debts of the old Society.
A meeting of the Greyiown Borough Council was held on Monday last, Present Crs Baillee, J. Smith, Fuller, R. V.Smith, Barnard, Kempton jun., and Udy (in the chair).
