lii the southern part of of the S.tate of. • Illinois there is a county called Edwards County, where no liquor has been, .factured or sold for twenty-five years. The county was settled about thirty years age by a number of temperance people, who have succeeded in running it on .temperance principles. And this is the rfeport that comes from Edwards The clefk of the Circuit Court testifies that the':'gaol during these twenty-five years has not averages one occupant a year, and the county has sent but one person to the penitentiary, and that man got drunk, at a licensed saloon in an adjoining county and killed his wife; that the county has an annual average of only three person to ~ support; that its taxes are 32 per cent lessthan in adjoining or license-granting counties; and that quarrels aro so few that tne Circuit Court completes its year's work usually in a week. Chicago, on the other hand, which licenses nearly 1000 saloons, pays 6?0,000dols. this year for police service.—From the League Journal,. March 15,1879,
