FEATHERSTON.

(from our own correspoijdent.). May 13th, 1879. Notwithstanding the representations of "0" in your contemporary at Greytown our township is usualy so quiet, and everything goes on in so steady a grovo.tiiat I find a weekly letter a difficult matter, so in my correspondence this week I must revert to affairs which occurred nearly two weeks since. On the Ist hist, a meeting was held in the schoolroom, to consider the desireability of adopting, or otherwise, the new scheme to raise a central church fund. The Lord Bishop of Wellington presided, and after opening the meeting with prayer, called upon Mr Gurr to read the circular which had been issued some time sineo respecting the scheme, His Lerdship fully unfolded the object and cleared away some erroneous impressions which had beeii left from a previous meeting. The Rev Mr Fancourt followed with an address, showing the superiority of the proposed plan over the existing one, which had proved itself insufficient, hence the desirability of a change' Mr Gurr said that the Church friends had passed a vote pledgingfthemsclvos to tho scheme some time siuce, but as some were presnt at this meeting who were not at tho last, perhaps it would bo as well for another proposition to be put. He-therefore proposed that—"This meeting having heard the new scheme for raising a central church fund thoroughly explained, sympathize with it, and pledges its hearty support."; This was carried unanimously. • The Oddfellows' Soiree on Friday night, despite the unfavorable weather, was quiet a success, Some thirty couples joined in the" light fantastic" until the small hours of the morning, and order and jollity prevailed throughout. As the Society had not to pay for either refreshments •or piano, some ten or twelve pounds must be netted. Last evening the Library Committee met at 7 o'clock in the school-room to form rules and appoint officers for the ensuing year. Mr Gurr was appointed secretary, and Mr Fry Librarian, Messrs -Cox, Gurr, W. Cundy, Wardcll, and Fry were appointed a sub-committee to prepare rules and report at next meeting. Mr Cox was authorized to expend £2O on books, There is a balanco in the Bank of L9 1 ? in favor of the Library, It. was resolved that an account be opened at tho. Bank of Australasia. Last night Sexton's Temperance Hotel was burnt to the ground, No cause is as yet discovered, although rumour says that it originated from the chimney, Fortunately the night was calm, and enabled the people to save the stables. Both the house and furniture were insured in different offices. The new assistant teacher commenced his work here last week. In Victoria he was an assistant in the Corporate High School at Sandhurst, but holds no certificate.
