THE 'MELBOURNE ARGUS' PROSCRIBED.
The following notice in a recent Victorian ' Government Gazette l"lnconsequence of the fabrication by, and the publication in, the' Argus' journal of certain false news, purporting to be genuine and authoritative,—concerning the proceedings and discussions of the Cabinet, being continuousily presevered in for several weeks last past, the public are hereby cautioned against giving any credence to either those statements or any similar kinds of news for the future in that journal. The 'Argus' journal has been refused any official information of the kind by the Chief-Secretary, who feels justified in taking this course, as that journal has for several months unpatriotically attempted to deprecate the financial credit of Victoria.— Bryan O'Logmen, Acting Chief-Secretary. Chief-Secretary's Office, Melbourne, 20th February, 1879." Commenting on the above, the ' Argus' says" The ' Gazette' has been frequently put to strange uses of late. It has contained theßlack Wednesday dismissals, the proclamations of the innocence of Mr John Woods of the offence of weilding a tar-brush at Melmsbury, and the recommendation of Geelong tweeds to the notice of the public servants who require uniforms made up. Tragedy, farce, .burlesque have had their turns, but the strangest spectacle yet is the notice to which we have given prominence, It is an exhibition of malice made pitiable by its feebleness."
