FARMERS CLUB.

To Ik FAllor of Ik Wairakapa Daily,

Sir,—Would you oblige mo by inserting the following remarks on the above subject in your valuable paperl have discovered with deep regret that there exists great apathy among our farmers in starting the club, when it is manifest to all who understand the objects that, if properly carried out, very greU good will result therefrom, The general objections to the institution appears to be the few farmers who have taken the initiative in its formation, and the meetings being held at an hotel. With regard to the first objection, I consider, as farmers would not attend the meetings, those gentlemen who did, and who have kindly interested themselves in starting the club, deserve great credit, and I feel convinced that they will gladly see farmers elected to the various otlices in their places at the next general meeting. I would at the same time, however, point out that those who have the selling of farms and farm produce are as much interested in the desired object as those who cultivate the soil. With regard to meeting in an hotel there is nothing definite yet settled in connection with the club, and the members 'can chose whatever rooms they may consider most desirable. In Masterton there once existed,, r. flourishing debating society, in which many of our local celebrit.es vented their oloquence. The subjects of debate chosen

were surely not'bo interesting or beneficial'aa those connected with agricultural pursuits. It is, tlioreforo, not unlikely" that the old members will join the club, and supply theoretical information'which the fanners can put into practice, theroby passing many winter evenings 111 pleasing •md useful discussion.

I would in conclusion request any inerested gentleman witli literary inclinaions to give their opinion on the subject liruiigh the medium of your columns, revious to the next meeting, which, as .'■dvertiscd, will take place on the sth April, for election of officers, &c.

I am, &c., March 24,1879. • 'D.D.
