MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting of tho Board was held on Saturday. Present Messrs Bennett, (chairman),- Moore, Beetham, Chamberlain, and Buchanan. . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following letters were read: —One from Mrs McKcnzie, requesting a settlement for land taken for a road through her property at Lower Manaia. One from H, S. Wardell acknowledging receipt of £sßlos, sum due to natives for land taken for a road across Te Ore Ore, and requesting to be furnished with a sketch plan shoving measurements and area of land taken.'

One from H. R, Bunny asking tho Board to expend £IOO in forming the road recently laid off from his houso to the Ruamahunga river. One from George Dagg, requesting that the road in the Waipoua block, from Mr Kibblewhite's section to section 38 might be felled and cleared.

One from F, G. Palmer, asking the Board to erect a whare for him on the Opaki road. One from the Under-Secretary of Public Works, relative to the gazetting of certain roads within tho district.

One from the Treasurer of West County Council, forwarding a cheque for £467 7s Cd, on account of payment made by tho Board on behalf of the Council, and also one informing thorn that the Council would pay to the Board the sum of L2OO to assist in metalling the Mauricevillo Road, provided they raised an equal amount.

One from F. Moore requesting that the road from Kaitawhati might be formed. One from J. A. Petherick, requesting payment of the balance of his account.

The Engineer's report was given in and read; also a letter addressed to him by Mr Minchin relative to the road across the Taueru atßideford.

Messrs Welch Harris and Chamberlain, waited on the Board asked them to metal about 20 chains of road on the Opaki. Mr D. Donald also, attended as to the Uriti road in No 6 Ward.,.

The Clerk reported that Mi' Everett had paid him £7 being a subscription of £5 from Mr Tuck and £2 from Mr Greenland towards the expense of tho cutting at Mokinui.

The following resolutions were then passed

That Mr Bremner be authorised to expend a sum to protect the bridges recently erected on the Manaia road, That the Engineer inspect and report on the work applied for by Mr Dagg; prepare a specification for the metalling of the Mauriceville road, and ascertain what sunt the settlers there would do the work for,

That Mr King be requested to furnish the informarion asked for by Mr Wardell. That the Chairman be requested to submit the letters of Henry Mann's to the.Chairman of the East County, to ascertain how lie thinks the Board should act in the matter to which they refer. That Mr H. R, Bunny be informed that the Board cannot at present undertake the work applied for but will do as soon as the new rates are struck. That Mr Minchin be allowed £1 10s travelling expenses for each meeting he attends.

That Mr Palmer's letter relativo to the erection of a Wliare bo referred to the West County Council. That the sum of £BO be voted to supplement the amount of £2OO promised by the West County Council for the purpose of metalling the Mauriceville road from the Forty-mile Bush to tlio centre of the settlement. That it be an instruction to the Engineer to proceed, as soon as he has finished the Surveys on the list, to make Working Sections of East Coast Road, Kaitawhatu, and Flat Ppint, as well as that through the swamp at Pohiri, in terms of the application of Mr F. Moore, dated the 26th Jaunary, 1879. That Mr Murray be again requested to act as arbitrator on behalf of the Board in fixing the: price to bo paid to Mrs MeKenae' for land taken, for a road through her property, That the necessarry steps bo immediately taken for gazetting the road lately surveyed through property on the late Mr Gilligan's estate.

That, tenders -be invited for the erection of a number of chains of fencing on the Opaki, for the several miles of road in the Tupurupuru and Te Witi blocks. The following payments were inado £ s. d.
