THE RAM FAIR.

[FIIOM our, OWN CoiUtiarONLlENT.] Carterton, Feb. 20,1879.

It is very certain that the Clerk of the weather is not propitions to the efforts made by tho Wairarapa and East Caost Pastoral and Agicultural Society. It will be within the rememberance of all. our readers what a drenching day that appointed for the inauguration of tho new show ground was, and to-day a fine but thick rain lias been falling almost without interniittance from early morn till 3 o'clock p. in, Despite however of the aqueous bounties of old father Pluvius there have been some 300 or 350 visitors on the ground. The knights of the hamHid' were Messrs lorns and J, M, Girdlestone (Masterton) and Mr A, Armstrong, (Carterton). The sales have been tolerably brisk and several lots have changed hands but prices as a rule averaged very low. As an instance I may quote one side that came within my immediate knowledge. Some rams purchased a twelvemonth ago in Christchuvch at L 9 per head, were yesterday disposed of at the rate of L 3 per head. Mr A. Armstrong had for sale Cotswolda and Merinos on behalf of the Hon. John Martin, of Huaiigarua, and Lincolns oil behalf of Mr John Smith, of tho Taratalii, but only disposed of a few small lots, buyers not being willing to como to the scratch so

far as prices in this instance were concerned.
