MANUFACTORIES.

To tkEditor Wairabap^Daily.Sik—ln your newspaper a week or so back something was said about the first town in tho valley that managed to get a factory would be tho one to go ahead, but that tho people would nevor get one unless thoy helped themselves. The majority will say, How can wo help ourselves; we have not the money 1 . Here is a suggestion as .to how one side, of Masterton can help themselves, and by so doing help the other: All that land the east side of the borough—Dixon's, Woodroofe's. Hacker's, Smith's, Lang's, W. lorns'/Fergusson's, Thompson's, T. Hill's, &c—that luu been cut up or about to be cut up into allotments, has, and will for some time to come, cause a glut in the. market of building lots. Now, if the owners of the land wore to form themselves into a committee (they could get others to join them) to consult as to which is the best means of improving and disposing of their lands, it might be done. Of course, it is confidently expected that the land on the other side of the borough will bo enhanced in value because of the railway, and the railway would be a great convenience to a factory, The borough extends along way beyond Kuripuni Greek, taking in land that is now marked as farms,'which would certainly become more profitable if a factory was being carried on on the north side of Kuripuni Creek. But how would it be if a'factory was erected on some of those farms 1 Tha allotments north of the creek would'not rise in value. Therefore, the work of the committee would be, as- land holders, to give land, -and, if needed, money, to forward tho object iii view, namely, the establishment of. a factory on the cast side of the' borough, north of Kuripuni Creek,

I suggest that a committee or company be formed, each member promising to take shares, and that outsiders slipuld take shares or promise to. ' Also the' appointment of a good secretary, to correspond re other factories. When, shaves were taken up, machinery might bo sent for and buildings erected. Thus the whole borough would be benefitted, and lands round the factory in particular. ' It has often been remarked of individuals in Masterton saying, "I am not going to earn money for other people." But somebody must start first and leave others to follow, elso how do all great companies get started, and some of them very successfully I—Yours, &c.., A Working Man,
