The libel action against the (“Southland News” Company and the “Southland Times” Company, by Southland Farmers’ Cash Supply Service was concluded in the Southland Supreme Court yesterday. Judge McGregor found that the use of the words referring to the Cash Supply Coy: “The whole organisation is a swindle,” was certainly libellous, and justification had not been proved. In the present case, it was not the speaker of the words who was concerned but the two newspapers. Judgment was entered for plaintiffs for £9OO damages, with costs as per scale, disbursements and witnesses expenses to be fixed by the Registrar, plus £l5 15/- costs for each of the extra days of trial, the damages and costs to be apportioned between the two defendants in equal shares.
