PERIL OF THE SEA
STEAMER RECEIVES SEVERE BUFFETING. CAPTAIN HAS TO BEACH HER. (Per Press Association—Copyright) Australian Press Association. Received this day, 10.45 a.m. SYDNEY, This Day. Buffeted by a heay sea, the Hunter River Company’s steamer “Allyn River” (143 tons) sprang a leak off Collaroy Beach. Her timbers opened and water poured into her hold. The pumps xvere manned, but the inrush of water was too much for the crew; and the captain beached the ship at Broken Bay, with water waist-deep in the engine-room. If it had risen another six inches, the vessel would have probably plunged to the bottom. The steamer “Gosford” went to the asistance of the “Allyn River,” and transhipped the deck cargo. The “Gosford” later towed the waterlogged steamer back to Sydney. From the time they boarded the the assistance of the “Allyn River,” they arrived back in Sydney late last night, none of the crew had a wink of sleep.
