The Waimate Advertiser. (Established 1898). Published every evening since 1914. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1928 SOUTH CANTERBURY WAR RELIEF SOCIETY.

The South Canterbury War Re lief Society has presented its thirteenth balance sheet and appears to be fairly certain in due course to present its twentieth. The total amount received in subscriptions to this fund was £32, 350 which has been increased to £67,473 by interest, etc. There remains after thirteen years of helping the needy exsoklier a sum of about £14,115; As the amount expended last year (slightly more than the year before be it noted) was £1,948 it may be assumed that the £14,000 odd will see the Society to its twentieth year or thereabouts. It is not too much to expect that after twenty years have elapsed from the declaration of peace the remaining needs should be supplied by Government from general taxation. The Society has with subscribed funds taken from Goernment shoulders an immense amount for relief work and deserves high commendation for its handling of the duties which it toofc up. It is not cheering to note that as time passes the applications for relief increase, and that men find themselves feeling the indirect results of their service abroad and have to make application for assistance to tide them and their depemSnnts over the time they have to spend in hospital. In many ea-es illnesses with which men are attacked, and whieh take much time to recover from are not directly traceable to war service and there is difficulty in securing a pension and these become eases for the Relief Society. With these facts in mind we are the more ready to commend the idea of making Poppy Day an appeal for assistance for these necessitous eases and we trust that on that day something substantial will accrue to the funds for those who suffer wai disability.
