DUNEDIN MARKETS

BRAY BROS.’ REPORT. Messrs Bray Bros., Ltd., Dunedin, report as follows; — Business in the produce line is quiet. Shipping, business is practically nil. Most of the business for chaff etc. is being done with northern ports. The oat market firmed a little owing to orders being received from overseas. and business was done at from 3/9 to 3/10 per bushel, f.o.b.s.i. for A grade, oats. Farmers are asking about 3/2 for A grade, and 2/10 for B grade, on trucks, sacks extra country sidings. The chaff market is steady. Supplies are being drawn from Canterbury, and a few consignments are coming forward from Central Otago Best quality is worth round about £5 15s per ton, ex truck, Dunedin. Local prices for milling wheat remain steady, and there is not a great quantity offering. Local millers are not operating to any extent. Tuscan is quoted at 5 7, on trucks, sacks extra, country sidings, and velvet up to 6/6 per bushel. There has been a better enquiry for fowl wheat from the North Island, and up to 5/8 f.o.b. sacks extra has been paid. Millers prices are as follows .- Flour: 200’s £l7 10s, 100’s £lB 10s, 50’s £lB 15s, 25’s £l9 ss. Bran £7. Pollard £9 10s

Oatmeal: 25’s £2l, 200’s £2O. There has been an increase of £1 per ton in pollard. The market has been short supply.

The potato market is steady, with no shipping business going through. The price of potatoes in Canterbury for prompt delivery is on the

low side for growers. The quotation for May June delivery is round about £5 10s to £5 15s per ton.

The onion market is depressed. Large quantities have come forward and most of the lines are starting to show signs of growth. Prices are ruling round about £7 per ton for the best fines. Other lines are quoted from £6. The present prices are not favourable to the growers. Business in the fruit marts has been fair in the week. Apples are still in over supply but most of the lines coming forward are of inferior quality, and these are being offered at very low prices. Pears are also in good supply and prices low.

Vegetables have been in good supply and prices low. Jam mellons are now offering freely. Vegetable marrows and pumpkins are low in price Cabbage, cauliflower, swedes, carrots etc., are all reasonable in price. Honey is in better supply than usual. Large quantities have come forward and first grade honey is offering in 601 b tins at 5d per lb, and 101 b tins at 5/6. The honey is first grade, and is lower in price than usual. The egg market has firmed. All lines coming forward are readily placed. Dairy pat butter is enquired for. Hams and bacon are in good supply and the market firm. Bacon has firmed up Id lb. during the week This is owing to the increased price of pork. The following' prices were realised during the week :— Section Honey; 9/Honey, bulk s|d, 10 lb. tin.-, 6/6, 2 lb. pottles 1/2. 5 lb. tins 3/9. Cucumbers: 4s to 5/6 case. Carrots 8/- cwt. Parsnips: 9/- cwt. Beetroot 1/-. Lettuce; Choice 2/6 to 3 - doz. Brussels Sprouts: 3d to 4d lb. Cabbage 1/6 to 2.--'-. Cauliflowers. 2- to 4/6 a bag. Eggs: 2/11, 3/- dozen. Blackberries: To 6d lb. Butter, pats, bulk 1/2, factory pats 1/4, 1/5. Peaches: Crates 3d to 4d, cases 4/6 to 6/6. Pears: Dumps, 4/6, 7/-, halves 2s to 3/6 ease.
