THE ELECTION RACE

The election bells are ringing, they’re ringing loud and clear, The air is full of election news, as polling-day draws near. The nominations have been declared and the acceptances are out, And seventeen will start from scratch, all game to win the bout “They’re off!” you ean hear the electors yell; it was a splendid start! “What’s that in the lead?” I saw him move and shoot out. like a dart. They’re round the bend and going well. My! what a lovely race! A few are right out in the lead, and seem to make the pace. They ’re going strong without, a douhti as in the votes do pour. But some arc lagging in the raee, they seem a trifle sore. They’re coming right out in tfie straight. “What’s that there in the lead?” He seems to leave them all behind, for sure he’s got the speed. The race is near a finish now, they’re scattered down the track, And some are going very strongly, while others are far back. So on they come, the whips are out, each one is on his own. But in the struggle for a place, poor — broke a bone. The electors now are cheering h-rd, the race is nearly done. They’re passing by the judge’s box, the laurels almost won. The ninth one, now has just arriv’d his tongue is hanging out. As he stands up to offer thanks, he ean hear the electors shout. The untried colt, he’s got a place. On the rails he never bore, He .ran from the start, a splendid race, and he never ran before. To those who lost the election race, to you we offer thanks. Some day, perhaps, you'll get a place in Ministerial ranks. Waimate, THE RHYMER. 22/4/27.
