THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE ELECTION.

Sir, —I. have been rather amused at the attitude adopted by the taxiproprietors, but my amusement has changed to concern at the manner in which the taxi-talk is being heeded by some members of the general public whose memory apparently does not carry them back far enough to realise that the position savours of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera. They have forgotten, apparently, the “Black Flag” procession and other incidents by which the taxi-men a few short years ago signified their disapproval of the then Council, of which Mr Evans was Mayor. The Council then were responsible for the removal of the taxi-stand to another site (which to the public mind, appeared just as suitable as th one they had to quit , and to which the taxi-men seem to want to go back); and the taxi-men were loud in their denunciation of the Council’s action. Would they vote for Evans and Co. again? “Not on your life!” Now he present Mayor and Council b ' e got, into the bad books of th<> h'ximen, although as far as 'an c ! can S g a - they have done no ' , to hurt the taxi interests than <! ■ he earlier Council. (Except tht : '”<■ incident arising from a rec '' ( ■■ uneil meeting, when one ma-- so was granted only condition' >:t from enquiries I have mi l, iind the Council was not actual visible for this but was mere! upon the report of the po' owever, the enI emy of yesterd ’ he bosoifi friend I of to-day, and ' A war cry now I is: “Down wit' D h and Co; let’s 1 vote for Evan' " 1 1 the sake of a I good laugh, I like to see Mr

Evans elected, for, judging by the happenings of ths past, it would not be long before he would run foul of them once more, and then we would hear the taxi cry again: “Out with Evans next election!” Surely the ancestors of the taximen mUst have been natives of Erin’s Isle, for the taxi-men seem to be “Agin the Government, whoever they are!” —I am, etc., SMILING.
