A shocking motor accident occurred at Waipawa last evening when a motor lorry driven by one Harper collided with a motor cycle ridden by Gordon McNutt, aged 17, who had with him Geoffrey' Bodent, aged IT. McNutt was killed outright. Bodent died early this morning.

Eight local golfers, Messrs L. G. Reilly, R. G. Scott, T. M. Laing, J. Menzies, J. Sheldon, — McEwan, and C. Hertslett and Mrs Hertslett, journeyed to Oamaru ,on Saturday to the official opening of the hew Qamaru golf links. Up to noon to-day the following gentlemen were nominated for seats on the Waimate Borough Councillor-. Mayor, Mr George Dash; Councillors, Messrs G. Joyce, A. E. Lewis, R. P. Harris, J. B. Robinson, W. G Paul, W. Nelson, A. Kirby and C. E. Clarke. An election is probable as three or four others who have been asked to accept nomination are giving the matter consideration, and in at least two instances consent has been given, but np to the present the nominations have not been sent in. Nominations close on Wednesday next.

Sir Harry Lauder got a good laugh at the Harrogate (Eng.) Boyal Hal! at the expense of the Mayor during a recent visit. The comedian told a story of how the manager of an hotel walking down the corridor before breakfast saw one of the hotel boys cleaning a pair of boots outside a bedroom door. This was smudging the fine carpet, and the manager wrathfully asked the boy why he hadn’t taken the boots downstairs with the others to be cleaned in the bootroom. “I couldn’t, sir.” replied the boy. “Inside the bedroom Harry Lauder is holding them by the laces under the door.” When the laugh at the story had subsided, Sir Harry turned to the Mayor, who was in a box, and exclaimed: “I told that story to the mayor this morning and he believed it.”
