PIONEER PASSES.
DEATH OF MRS INKSTER. LIVED IN WAIMATE SINCE 1875. Early on Thursday evening, March 31, there passed away peacefully in her 95th year, at her late residence, Shearman Street, one of Waimate’s early pioneers in the person of Ann, widow of the late Janies Inkster, who predeceased her nine years ago at the age of 87 years. Mrs Inkster, who was a native of the Shetland Isles, left there with her husband and family, coming out in a sailing ship, “The Star of China,” under 800 tons, arriving in Lyttelton on August 4th, 1875, after a voyage lasting 105 days. They came straight on to Ashburton, remaining there only a few months, when they left by coach for Waimate late in 1875, where they have resided ever since.
The late Mrs Inkster had only been away from Waimate on one occasion during the 52 years in which she resided in the town.
Like all the early' pioneers, she led a very strenuous life up to 25 years ago, when a serious illness made her more or less an invalid. Up to that time, through her kindly and sympathetic disposition, she was a source of comfort to many who were in sickness or trouble no matter what hour of the night the call came.
The late Mr and Mrs Inkster celebrated their diamond wedding in the vear 1913. She leaves four sons, one daughter, seventeen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grand-children.
