WOUNDS OF WAR
HEALING AT CHATEAU THIERRY OLD BRIDGE REPLACED. PARIS, Oct. 20. Die wounds of rhe war st Chateau Thierry. France, are healing. Ugly scars, however, must long remain to be a reminder of the horrors through which towns have passed. The opening of the new bridge was celebrated on the anniversary of the birth of Jean La Fontaine, the fabulist, who was born there more than 300 years ago. An ancient statue of this timehonored citizen has stood at the entrance to the old stone bridge which has spanned the Marne at this place for nearly 200 years. At the moment when the Germans were turned back from crossing the bridge a shell struck a leg of Jean La Fontaine, who, with bis broken leg. is still standing proudly on guard. It seemed appropriate that this great fete should Eave the double significance. It was at this place that the tide of the war was turned. The bridge was sacrificed, as were the lives of so many brave soldiers, but victory was gained, and Paris, for the moment, was saved.
