WAIMATE, WAKE UP: “WHO’S YOUR LADY FRIEND?”

(To the Editor). — Sir, —I was very pleased on reading your report of the Waimate football match in Oamaru last Saturday; and took notice of the different treatment meted out to visitors from Waimate in Oamaru and in Timaru. The people in Oamaru lay themselves out to give the visitors a good time, and entertain them like friends; but not so in Timaru. Timaru always raises the price when they see you coming, and give you a Is snack for Is 6d, or a Is 6d dinner for 2s 6d; and when you go to the beautiful Caroline Bay, they watch you to see that you do not steal any of their sand. And the “pow ers that be” in Timaru always fancy that South Canterbury ends at Saltwater Creek-—except that when they have an axe. to grind, they come to Waimate. I was pleased to see the part Mr Geo. Dash took when the “talent” came here from Timaru to grind the Tekakpo axe; and I hope when the Trades and Friendly Societies here contemplate another outing, they will give Oamaru a turn. Oamaru has fine gardens, and plenty of room for sea bathers; and they will make you welcome whenever you go there. —I am, etc., JOHN HUNT.
