NOTES AND COMMENTS. “One of the best country meetings anywhere,” remarked a Christchurch visitor to the Waimate J^ ac ing Club’s meeting yesterday. “The •quality of most of the racing was high, and equal, I think, to much of the racing we have at Riccarton.
The investments on the totalisatat the Waimate meeting yesterday amounted to £16,209. This was a decrease of £1221 on last year s total which was £17,430 10s.
C. Voight rode a first second and third at Waimate yesterday. He piloted Mr Alan Cambridge’s Monix ide to victory in the Trial Plate, was up on Mr P. Delargy’s Kilfane, who came second in the Cup event, and rode The Reaver to third place in the President’s Handicap.
Prior to the Morven Trot yesterday. T. Kennedy, owner of Trilson, was fined £1 for failing to have a training license, and his horse was. scratched.
The gate takings realised at the Races yesterday amounted to £473 13s as against £535 12s of the prevr <us year, a slight falling off of £6l 19s.
It is reported that the heavy taxation levied on racing in Tasmania is going to lead to several clubs closn? down in the meantime.
When E. C. McDermott won the Seadown Handicap on Erin’s Logan at Timaiu on Saturday, he was making his first appearance in the saddle since his serious accident of a ,ear ago. McDermott rode Jim Dillon, who came thiid in the Hook Trot yesterday ■ and also Mr H. Saunders’ Generator in the Morven Trot.
The Timaru Handicap winner, Waitaki Girl, penalised to the 36yds mark in the Farewell Handicap to be beaten by a neck by John Poiartnr was unlucky, as she had to step to the tune of 2min 13 l-ssec to get second berth. Waitaki Girl did not take part in this year’s Waimate •meeting.
Quite a spectacular turn was staged on the Waimate course yesterday, as an entre act for the Waitangi Hack Welter. A false start wae made, and Mr J. T. Hogan s •Sunny Mac broke away, galloping at top speed round the course. On completing the first round, Mr W. B. Freeman, Clerk of the Course, went out to stop the runaway, and after a burst of exciting riding, which the crowd watched with keen interest, succeeded in pulling him down to a halt. By this time, however. Sunny Mac had done two rcunds, and his performanee in the Welter immediately after was very naturally not a brilliant one.
Although the famous trotting sire, Our Thorpe was acknowledged a match for Logan Pointer, one of the progeny of the latter won good second place from a filly of. Our Thorpes siring yesterday, when Choubra, who is trained in Waimate by Alec Smith, came up to the judge two lengths sooner than Kate Thorpe in the Morven Trot. Choubra is by Logan-Pointer— Wild Myrtle, while the Our Thorpe’s filly was out of Blue Ruin mare.
The well-known rider, M. McCar“en was up on Ballymena, who ran eery the Cup yesterday, though gaining only third place. McCarten was expected to ride at Marten today. G. Young, who rode the v-i’nner, Palestrina, is to accompany Gloaming to Wellington tomorrow.. Both left by the express yesterday.
