OBITUARY.
MR JAMES PREECE. There passed away suddenly at Waimate last week an esteemed resident in the person of the latd Mr James Preece. The deceased gentleman was born in Englant in 1873 and came out to New Zealand with his father, settling on a farm at Woodend, North Canterbury. Mr Preece married a daughter of Mr Eagle, of Kaiapoi. He later removed to Taranaki, where he took up a dairy' farm, coming thence to Papanui Christchurch in 1891). From there he removed to Waihao Downs, where he resided up to the time of his retirement, whence he came to live in Waimate. He took a keen interest in shooting matches and more especi ally fishing which was one of his favourite sports. Mr Preece was la very popular gen'tlemta and was widely known throughout the distjrict. His death is regretted by a large c ircle of friends, whose deepest sympathy will be extended to his widow and family in their sad bei’eavement.
MRS HARRY MASON. Quite a gloom was cast over the Hook di. iric, when on Saturday morning it. became known that the wife of the popular retamed soldier, Mr Harry Ala son, had passed away. The deceased lady who wag held in the highest, esteem by all with whom she came in contact She was a native of Tyrone Ireland, and came to this country some eight yeajrs ago. The deepest, sympathy of the whole district goes out to her bereaved husband. MR F. W. B. GREViLLE. Mr F. \V. B. Greville, editor of the “Dairyman” died yesterday after a brief illness, aged G 7 years.
The death is reported by telegram from Wellington, of Mr F. W. B. Gi'eviHe aged'67, who was first editor of the Waitangi Tribune,, a newspaper published in Waimate about 1874. Mr Greville came to Waimate 'from the West Coast with a Mr Cumming, with whom he was previously associat ed on a Westland newspaper; and the two were associated in the first issue of the “Tribune.” The late Air Greville took an active par's in social life in Waimate, and will be remembered by some of the older residents. For the, past twentyfive years, Mr Glreville has been editor of the New Zealand “Dairyman,” Wellington, with the first issue of which, twenty-eight years ago-, he was also associated. ' Mr Greville paid a brief visit to Wainiate about a month ago, when he chatted interestingly with a- member of _t.he “Daily Advertiser” staff concerning founding of the “Tribune ; ” and remarked that next year would see the jubilee anniversary of the first publication of a newspaijrer in Waimate.
