The Collector of Customs has been advised by wireless from Awanui that the ketch Edna is a total loss north of Parenga Heads. The crew are safe, and are proceeding to Auckland to-day. The Edna was owned by the Nobel Explosive Company, and was parrying explosives to Greymouth. The hull and cargo were insured in England for £5OOO. The captain of the Rona has telegraphed that the vessel is right in the centre of the channel of Parenga Harbour, resting on a bar. Apparently the cargo is intact. At low water the mast is visible. Further details show that the land was obscured by a north-east storm when, shortly before 11 a.m., breakers were sighted a short distance to leeward. The vessel was qnder reduced sail, more being set to beat to sea, but the vessel drifted on to a sandspit. Captain Burke and the two men spent the night in the scrub in the hopes of salvage, but the Edna slipped off the spit during the ebb at'night into six fathoms. She is considered to be a total loss, and it is doubtful if the i cargo can be saved.
