AUCKLAND, Feb. 2. Wft wn 25 Wa * im P° se<l on Ernest Walkei Williams, manager for the Direct Supplies Company, w h o appeared at the Police Court on three charges of managing a lottery. It was stated that the system was founded upon a, 'contract by which goods were sold on a time payment basis, with the intimation that from among the customers one person each week would be selected to obtain goods worth £4 10s free. The defence was that the selection was made by merit, not by chance, as the defendant chose the person he thought would be the best advertising medium. A conviction was recorded in one instance, and decision on the other two charges was reserved.
