The Waimate Advertiser. (Established 1898). (Published every evening since 1914). SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1923. THE R.S.A.

The committee of the local Returned Soldiers’ Association has arranged a picture benefit for Thursday, the 22nd February, 1923. For some time now, the finance of the local Association have been in a very unsatisfactory condition. The Club is by no means insolvent,, but it has been difficult to carry on as efficiently as wished with the money at its disposal. There are a considerable number of unfinancial members in and about the district to whom an appeal is being made for payment of their accrued dues. It is not so long yet since the cessation of the Great War, and moreover even since that date we have not been entirely free from the prospects of further conflicts. Bearing this in mind, it seems a matter for much regret that the returned soldiers’ sentiment has waned to the extent that it is found difficult to support a Club on a very unpretentious scale in Waimate. It is suggested that not less than 80 per cent of the New Zealand population are Imperialists; one of the strongest pillars of Imperialism is your Returned Soldiers’ Association. Surely therefore, it is the duty of the community to foster this Asociation and to do all in its power to make it convenient for returned soldiers to meet in social life and so foster the returned soldier sentiment. We have no hesitation in earnestly requesting our readers to give consideration to the appeal that is going out from the local Committee to unfinancial members, and also to the community in general to support the Arcadia Picture Benefit which is being organised on behalf of the local Association. It is trusted that

this is merely the commencement of a campaign: to revive the interest taken in the- Association, and given some sufficient encouragement, no efforts should be spared to have the Waimate Returned Soldiers’ organisa tion put on ai footing that we undoubtedly believe it should occupy in every community.
