Fifty-seven years ago, one man without. money, and misunderstood, sneered at and persecuted, toiled day and night amongst the poor, the outcast, the criminal, the fallen and the friendless, determined at all costs to help make the world better cleaner, and more God-like. That was William Booth. Aftej- aver half a century, a mighty army of earnest men and women has evolved, who are at the present time at work in 73 different countries and colonies, speaking 46 different languages, with 33,436 bandsmen giving all services absolutely free, and employing 24,582 officers continuously toiling amongst criminals and unfortunates and betrayed girls, the poor, the sick, the home ; less, the friendless and the heathen. Its work acknowledged and honoured by the nations and rulers and governments everywhere, the world’s greatest army of social service workers is putting into effect sane and practical methods that secure permanent and far-reaching results. The army is the Salvation Army, and one word accounts for their success —sincerity. The Salvation Army not only believed that there was hope for the worst, but it also went for the most disreputable in the hotel bar, in the slum, in the prison, and at the street corner. Its success has been attained in the most difficult fields of human effort at the minimum of cost, and its work must go on. A great deal of the maintenance of the Army is due to their great yearly effort, the Self Denial appeal, the result of which assists them to carry on the great work of mercy and benevolence. This year the appeal begins on Saturday, October 14, and all those sympathetically disposed toward the work of this organisation are asked* to contribute liberally. The earnestness of this great band of men and women certainly commends the appeal to every section of the public.
