HUNT CLUB

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The Committee of the Waimate District Hunt met in the A. And P. Rooms on Saturday afternoon, there being present Messrs E. C. Studholme (President), R. Frost, A. Med-, licott, T. Twomey, J. R. Cochrane, E. B. Harrison and R. R. G. Rattray. Apologies were received from Messrs J. Goldstone, R. A. Richards and J. M. Rattray.

The resignations of Messrs J. Stevenson D. M. McFarlane and T. Wilson were received with rgeret.

With regard to three other members who wrote resigning, a subcommittee was appointed to interview the gentlemen concerned, with a view to getting them to reconsider their resignations. Among other correspondence received from the New Zealand Racing Conference was the report of the racecourse detective (Mr J. Torrance), on the recent Hunt races. Mi’ Twomey said he had never seen a race meeting more free of undesirables. Mr Studholnie endorsed Mr Twomey’s remarks, stating that the meeting was very clean. The Racing Conference wrote re saddle cloths. It was decided to leave the matter over in the meantime.

The Secretary read an approximate statement of the receipts and expenditure in connexion with the recent meeting, which showed a profit of about £l2O. lOn the receipts side appear nomination and acceptance fees £217 10s, gates £177 16s 6d, privileges £4B 13s, totalisator £548 15s 6d, fines £4; total £996 15s. Expenditure is made uup as follows: Stakes £570, salaries, fees and wages (including Secretary’s salary) £B6 9s lid, printing, ambulance, band luncheons and refreshments £63 15s 9d, taxation £177 Ils 6d, other items £6 6s 6d, leaving a credit balance of £92 Ils 4d.

Mr Twomey thought the Club had hqd a most successful meeting. Taken all through the year had been more successful in every way. Mr Studholme said there had been no hitch in the proceedings on the day of the races. The fence in front of the stand was apparently still too narrow, some of the horses getting round. He thought that in many cases, however, the jockeys were to blame. The only solution of the matter was by extending the fence by the addition of two more hurdles. The racing on the inside track had been a great improvement, and the track had proved a splendid steeplechase course. The going had been splendid and should be still better next year. The Club was now on the upward grade and with another good year should be in a good financial position. He thought it had now turned the corner, and if the membership was kept up the Club was in a fair way to have a prosperous career. If might be advisable to approach the racing Conference with a view to having the clause eliminated regarding trots being debarred. By conferring with other clubs something might be done by way of a remit to the Conference for < permit to hold trots at future meetings. The Hunt Club was not in the same position as ordinary racing clubs. Mr Studholme also referred to the conscientious manner in which Mr Dennehy had carried out his work In erecting the jumps for the race meeting. On the motion of Mr Studholme, a special vote of thanks was passed to Mr H. Saunders for work done by him. In speaking to the motion, Mr Studholme said Mr Saunders had done a lot of valuable work in preparing the course for the meeting and had helped the Club in every way possible, and had saved the Hunt a great deal of money. Votes of thanks were passed to the following gentlemen for services on the day of the races:—Mr M. Leonard, for flagging horses in, and for assistance in measuring the course; Mr W. B. Freeman, for acting as starter; Mr W. Goldstone, hon. clerk of scales; Mr A. Dun/tah, assistant clerk of scales; Mr T. Twomey. hon| timekeeper; Mr R. Frost, hon clerk of course; Dr Hayes, hon. surgeon; Mr G. C. , Very complimentary references were made by Messrs Studholme, Harrison and Twomey to fhe good

work done by the Secretary (Mr A. J. Hoskins) in connection with the race meeting.

Mr Rattray moved a vote of thanks to Mr Studholme for the work he had done at the course and in arranging for the races; and that Mr Richards and Mr Studholme be thanked for the hospitality they had extended to visitors on race day. The motion was carried by acclamation.

Accounts owing in connection with the race meeting were passed for payment. Mr Studholme was deputed to do whatever was possible in the matter of approaching the Racing Conference with regard to the issue of a permit to hold trotting events at the Hunt Club races. It was decided that a recommendation be made to the incoming committee that the steeplechase fences be widened.
