CLEARING UP THE SOMME.

BATTLEFIELD DEBRIS GATHERED UP. FRENCH PEASANTS’ WORK. Per Press Association —Copyright. Paris, August 6. Great progress has been made at immense expense with the reeonstruc tion of the Somme battle area, almost all of which is cleared of shells, whereof 245,000 tons have been removed. Trenches have been filled in, and 25 million square metres of barbedwire entanglements cleared. It is estimated that in 1918 the area was beyond habitation and was known as the “Red zone.” Thanks largely to the affection of the peasants for the soil, it has been reduced to one-seventh of what it was, chiefly round Thiepval. Longueval, and Guillemont. Thiepval will not be rebuilt. Pozieres, after all, will be reconstructed.
