A meeting of the provision trade section of the London Chamber of Commerce passed by a large majority a resolution expressing readiness to co-operate with New Zealand Shippers for better methods of marketing their’produce, always pro vid--ed that no scheme of control is set up in this country which would create artificial conditions, as such a scheme would prove prejudicial alike to the interests of the producer, the distributor, and the consumer; also expressing the view that no revolution in the methods of marketing New Zealand dairy produce should be supported by the New Zealand Government until all interested branches of trade in this country have been consulted. CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKETS. .Christchurch, May 26. Fowl wheat is moving slowly and sales havg been made at 4s to 4s 3d f.0.b., sacks extra. Oats are practically without inquiry. There was a report of an export outlet to England, but so far ther e is no margin for profit. The local value for A grade is nominally 3s Id f.0.b., and Home quotations scarcely come within this figure. At country stations A’s are worth nominally 2s 5d to 2s 6d, and B’s 2s Id to 2s 3d.

Cowgrass is being offered to a very small extent, an unusual circumstance at this time of the year. In some districts farmers are covering up their stacks still the spring sooner than accept the price offering, their view being that with th e probability of heavy sowing values will firm. The maximum of offers at present is lOd, which covers good to indifferent lines. Some business has taken place with the south for August delivery.

Peas have passed as high as up to 8s 7d on trucks for Partridge. The market is nearly over.

Cocksfoot is meeting quiet business at 5Jd, to 6d to farmers. Both perennial and Italian ryegrass markets are firm and good; 26-271 b seed perennial machine dressed has brought up to 4s 9d, which is equal to 3s 6d to 3s 8d to fanners. Well marked Italian has been traded as 5s for machine dressed, which is equivalent to 3s '9d to 3 S lid to farmers. This business is for August delivery.

Linseed has experienced a belated improvement and is now firm at £l4 10s per ton to farmers, at which figure some business has been done. Farmers, however, are not offering freely at the price.

The potato market is very depresser. Over buyers have been puitting on the already stagnant market, the figure being less than a 75s f.o.b. basis about 55s to farmers. The deluge of shipments to the North Island has eased down to something like normal.

Onions are about done. To growers they are worth £6 5s per ton for sound conditioned. Flour—According to Government price, £lB per ton, f.0.b., Lyttelton, Timaru and Oamaru.

AUCKLAND MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent). AUCKLAND, May 24. Cold, dry weather prevails. Distributing merchants advise a fail' bus, ness. ‘

Oats.--The market is dull, with good supplies ex recent shipments, and a moderate inquiry. A Gartons, 3s Id; B Gartons, 2s lid', f.0.b., s.i. Ruakuras and Sparrawbills are steady at recent rates. Algerians are in steady’ dtemand. Machine-dressed and clipped are worth from 3s lOd to 4s f.0.b., s.i., and good bright farmers’ dressed 3s 2d f.0.b., s.i. Table Potatoes.—Present stocks are working down, and there is a good demand at £5 ex wharf. For May and June shipment the quotation is £4, f.0.b., s.i. Onions, —The market is weak. «A. shipment just to hand is selling at £8 ex wharf.

Chag—Stocks are congested', arid there is a dull demand. Consignments of local quality are difficqlt to quit, grime Blenheim is quoted at 5s f. 0.., s.i., Picton; Hawke’s Bay, £5 f.0.r., s.i. Rangitikei, £5 7s fid, f.0.r., s.i. Milling Wheat—There are ample stocks.

Fowl Wheat.—The market is quiet, with good stocks, and a steady demand at 4s 6d f.0.b., sacks extra. Bran and Pollard.—Supplies of bran are ample, but pollard is short of requirements.

Cape Barley.—Moderate stocks meet with a steady demand. Prime, 3s 3d; feed lines, to 2s 9d, f.0.b., s.i.

Emerald Ryecorn,—The market is .well supplied, and inquiry is dull at 4s fid, f.0.b., s.i. MaizC,—-The colder weather is causing a better demand, but average shipments are meeting requirements at 5s ex wharf.

Seeds. —There is a fair demand, but values are unchanged. Standard Akaroa cocksfoot, 8-Jd; dressed cowgrass, 1355; white clover, 190 s; Italian ryegrass, 4s 9d; perennial ryegrass, 28-29 lb seed, 4s 9d f.o.b. Manures. —Blood and bone, £9 f.0.b., s.i.; Calcutta bonedust, £l3; Sydney bonedust, £ll 15s; superphosphate, £5 15s, all ex store; basic slag, £5 15s; kainit, £4 10s, both ex wharf.

LOCAL MARKETS. GRAIN AND PRODUCE. Friday evening. The following are the latest quotations for grain in and around Waimate: Vetches. —15s 6d to 16s. Cow grass. —lOd to Is. White Clover —Is to Is 3d. Oat sheaf chaff. —65s to 70s. Barley—There is_ little inquiry. Nominal (.quality, 2s 3d to 2s 6d; “Chevalier, 4 ” 2s 9d to 3s.

Wheat is difficult at present to get away, millers at present having practically stopped buying.. Oats;—A grade Gartons 2s 6d to 2s 7d; B grade 2s 3d to 2s sd; Duns 2s 9d to 3s; Algerians, (feed), 2s to 2s 3d; better quality 2s 3d to 2s 6d. Partridge Peas —F.o.q. 7s 6d; No. I‘, Bs. Horse Beans —5s 9d to Gs. Potatoes—Very little inquiry. Nominal price about £3 on trucks.

GROCERIES. Local produce merchants report that trade is still brisk, the existing financial .depression, not .being felt by them to any extent.. The retail price of butter remains at Is Bd, but there is a tendency toward an increase.

Eggs are quoted at 2s wholesale, nohiina Iretail price being -2s 4d. A decrease will take place in the price of Edmonds’ baking, powder, together with several other lines, at the end of the month.

CLEARING SALE AT REDCLIFF. Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness report having held a most, successful

clearing sale at Redcliff on Friday on behalf of Messrs Dowthwaite Bros. There was a very large attendance of buyers at the sale and bidding throughout was brisk. The following are some of the principal prices obtained: — Sheep: 1,2, 3 shear B.L. ewes 37s »B.L. ewe and ram hoggets 1 3/Bgns; s.m. ewes 275, full mouth ewes 17s, lambs 16s 6d, fat ewes Ils.
