Per Press Association— Copyright.

LONDON, January 11

Mr E. Lucas (Agent-General for South Australia) announces in the Press that he has cabled the Hon. Barwell regarding the statement by the “Morning Post’s” Australian correspondent that the Australian gapers have, with one accord fallen on Mr Barwell, resenting furiously his scheme for the Asiatic settlement of the Northern territory. Mr Barwell replied that the “Morning Post” statement, which was absolutely incorrect, was receiving considerable support from newspapers, including the “Register,” and the “Age/ also from influential -citizens of various States.

Mr Lucas also cabled Mi Barwell a statement by the “Times” correspondent that Mr Harwell not only supported the introduction of coloured labour into the Northern territory, but advocated granting full citizen rights to Asiatics.

Mr Barwell replied that the reported advocacy of full citizen rights was incorrect, adding that all experience goes to show that the development of the Northern territory by white labour was impossible.
