Olympia for the night of their performance as a donation to the funds. The Waimate Auction Mart desire their clients to notice that they are holding their sale on Friday of this week to enable buyers of poultry to make their purchases in time for Christmas. The holiday travelling rush has set in, and most of the expresses carry a good freight on their journeys. It is expected, however, with the two expresses running daily as in normal times, that the Department will be able to eope with the traffic. Small boys with numberless birds’ heads and eggs in “cold storage” will be pleased, to learn that the County Council will be purchasing them as from January 1.

The resignation of the members of the Waihao Water Race Committee was received by the County Council this morning, on account of the Council’s inability to make the desired allowance to them. The Council, in this connection, received a let ter from the Audit Office stating that the Crown Law Office had advised that the Water Committee could only be pai dexpenses in accordance with the terms of the Counties’ Act. It was decided to call a meeting of ratepayers at Morven to elect a newcominittee or make other arrangements.

The Development League’s protest regarding the Waitaki electoral boun daries received the support of the County Council this morning.

At the County Council meeting today the tender of W. C. Clark for the erection of a roadman’s cottage at Waihaorunga at a cost of £895 14s was accepted. “Timber is rising instead of .falling,” remarked Cr. Drinnan during the discussion. Only two tenders were received.

As a* result of a visit to Kurow by members of the “Splints and Bandages” Coneet Party, their entertainment will be given there on December 29th.. The residents of the district are fortunate in having an opportunity of seeing the “Splints and Bandages”, as their Company is one of the best amateur combinations which has yet shown in Waimate. Practically the same personnel appeared at Hakataramea as “The Jollies” in 1916, so that their quality is not unknown in the district. The Company has been greatly improved since then, however, and the personnel of the Company is as follows : —Miss Catter (soubrette), Miss Ferriter (soprano), Miss Wilson (contralto), Miss Joan Meredith (dancer, Mr. Blake (tenor),Mr. Brittenden (bass), Mr. L. Nash (light comedian), Mr Paqualin (humorous entertainer), Mr. Kirkpatrick (tenor), Mr. A. Inkster (comedian). Arrangements for the visit are being made by a committe of half-a-dozen Kurow gentlemen, and a dance will be held after the concert.

For the Christmas trade Kerr and Co. have decided to sell their large stock of carpets regardless of cost. Wilton carpets from £l5 10s only at Kerr and Co.

The huge programme of events for which valuable pizes are offered promises to provide the North Otago Caledonian Society with a good entry from athletes for their sports meeting on 2nd January. The main attractions in the running events are the Caledonian Handicap of £3O, and the one mile of £l5. The cycling men are catered for in three open races, principal of which is the Wheel Race of £l7. In addition good money is given in the jumping and field events. The runners will have the opportunity of competing for a silver cup valued at £lO 10s mid a meday valued at £3 3s, given for most points, while the Caledonian Handicap, 440 and 880 yards all carry gold medals for the winners. Gold medals are also provided for most points in cycling, jumping and field events. Athletes shoul dnote that entries close with the secretary, Box 42, Oamaru,' on 28th December.

The frost on Monday night was severe enought to have done much damage to the wheat crops, had the grain been in flower Another fewdays later, and the harvest. would have been of a very different nature to what is expected. Crops generally throughtout the district present a very pleasing appearance, mid many fannes expect the season to be a record one. Many crates of strawberries are now being despatched daily to the city markets, and the quality of the berries is good. The

severe nor’wester on Saturday, however left its traces on many fruit crops; but it might have been much worse.

"The Man that was Left’ is the subject at the Tent Mission, next the M.P, Stores, to-night at 7.45, when Mr Forbes Maeleod, Scottish evangelist, again speaks, and it is expected that this interesting subject will meet with a liberal response. Mr Maeleod delivers another address to-morrow night at the same time.

Possibly the only cedar tree in the district, the tree at the rear of the County Council Chambers, was the cause of the Waimate Tennis Club’s application for a strip of land being refused by the Council this morning. The Club desired to lay down a new court on the same level as the present ones, and to do this on the land desired necessitated an excavation of three feet right at the roots of the cedar. This the Council feared might endanger the life of the tree, and accordingly had to refuse the application.

Rifle Championship is to be held at Papawai, near Greytown, commencing Thursday, 23rd February, when the Ballinger Belt and cups and shields will be fired for, as would have been the case if the meeting had been held hi theordinary way at Trentham. The first prize in each will be £lO and in the King’s Prize £5O. There will be eight matches of £lOO each. The total prize money is about £l2OO. The meeting will be controlled by a combination of the Dominion Rifle Association and the Wairarapa Association, Colonel Collins being the chairman, assisted by Messrs Marshall and Fellingham representing the Dominion Association and Messrs King and Nix representing the Wairarapa Association. Mr Webster, of Wairarapa has been appointed secretary and will be assisted by Lieut. Williamson of the Dominion Rifle Association. Midnight train, Christmas Eve. Seats may be booked at Price Bros.’ Office. Queen Street, to connect with midnight train Christmas Eve, per motor, to and from Studholme.
