I The weather was fine and th going was good for the conclusion of the Grand National meeting, and the attendance was up to the average for a final day. The racing was productive of some surprises, only one favourite being successful during the day and one or two of the contests were less interesting than expected. Though fewer visitors were in the city than usual in National week, the totalisator turnover for the six days gallops and trots) reached £375,859 10s, against the aggregate of £376,19 in 1920. Backers had a rare surprise sprung on them in the Longbeach Huntons’ Hurdles, as of the seven starters Red Blaze was sent out as the outsider of the field. Innesfalien opened up a useful lead in the early stages with Red Blaze always handy. At the final jump the leader retired and Red Blaze took charge. Though tiring badly over the last 1 bit, the outsidr lasted long enough to win by a length from Likelihood. Red Blaze is owed by Mr A. G. McDonald, president of the Geraldine Racing Club, and he returned his few supporters a dividend of nearly half a century. Likelihood was putting in good work at the to reproduce his first day’s showing. Though loaded with 12.13 in the Aylesbury Steeplechase, Fire Eater was backed down to nearly level money. As usual, he was soon out in front, pulling very hard, and, despite a faulty jump at the stand double, he raced out of the straight well clear of Tigerland. Stumbling badly on landing over Cutts’s fence, Fire Eater lost his rider, merely registring his first seroius mistake in his career. Half a mile from home John Bunny raced past Tigerland, but it was merely on sufferance. Clearing the last fence in great style, Tiger-

land won with a lot in reserve by half a dozen lengths from John Bunny. This marked Tigerland’s second win at the meeting, and stamps him as a greatly-improved ’chaser. Dainty Step was backed for the Heathcote Handicap as if the result was a foregone conclusion. Getting badly away, the favourite acted as whipper-in for most of the journey, and, though she was racing on well as the post was reached, she could do no better than finish just behind the placed horses. After Caverock and Link Up had made most of the running, the latter beat a retreat. Then Prince Martian joined Caverock, and i na ding-dong finish the North Islander got the verdict by a neck. Hiero did well to defeat the others, though had Dainty Step got well away she would probably have won. Clean Swop, Pine Arch, and Arch Salute never threatened danger.

Phil May opened up such a useful lead in the early stages of the Styx Hurdles as to have royal prospects. He was quite six furlongs to the good of Master Boris as they started the run home, going in great style. The last hurdle brought abcut his dwonfaß, leaving the iss-ie t >

Master Boris and Tigritiya. The] te rput up a good finish, but weight told on the fiat, and Ma, Boris scored comfortably by th lengths. Both he and Tigritiya , right up to their earlier form; Dribble, Paiiform, and Endure » all beaten a long way from hum. Most of the ten starters in Sydenham Hurdle Race came in solid support, the Kemball brad —Gladful and Mill o’ Cowrie—wi, ing up in most demand. The outsit of the field was Explorer, who , making bis first effort over jumps the meeting. Clearing right away the early stages, Explorer had a I lead when three parts of the jourr had been covered; and Already, I magogue, and Multive were he ridden to keep within striking j tance of him. Easily holding the, position in check, Explorer run Im a very easy winner from Multi, who improved on his Grand Xatin Hurdle display.
